Very fun! Kind of predictable. Interesting to see what nursing looked like in 1943. I would condider reading others of the series. Looks like she has quite a lot of interesting nursing jobs throughout her career! ( )

I recently came across a box of my mother's old books, which I had enjoyed as a child, but not thought about in years. Some of them were from the Cherry Ames series, and I decided to revisit the past by reading the first one. In it, eighteen-year-old Cherry leaves home to attend nursing school at Spencer Hospital. World War II is making itself felt, and there is a great need for nurses and doctors both at home and in the war effort. Cherry's first year is spent in earnest effort, with an occasional high jinx with friends, innocent flirtation, and even a top secret patient. Written in 1943, the book reflects the idealism of the idea of the heroic nurse. ( )

Fun! I'd never happened to read any Cherry Ames before. They're written in an older style, but not an awkward one - slightly removed from the viewpoint character, mostly. And unabashedly proud of being able and willing to help. Cherry's adventures work - she's lucky, several times, in finding the right thing to say or do, but she's lucky in a reasonable way for who she's depicted as being, nothing comes out of a blue sky. I really enjoyed this book and intend to continue with the series; I'm glad they've been rereleased. ( )

A wonderful adventure for a budding young girl. Cherry Ames is a stellar role model. Helel Wells writes so well that a young reader is transported into whatever location Cherry is discovering. ( )

This was my sister's book and I'm not sure I actually finished it. I did start it, I remember that. If I did finish it, I didn't care much for it. ( )
