Beautiful Country is a book not easily forgotten. Qian Julie Wang"s story will resonate with many immigrates and native citizens alike. Raising yourself and parents is hard to do, but raising yourself and parents in a foreign land, going to school and trying to stay positively on the right path is even harder. This author does it all and comes out well rounded on the other side. Great and quick read, the first time and the 10th time read. ( )
Beautiful Country is a memoir of the author's life primarily between the ages of roughly 6 to 12. She writes about how difficult life was for her family living in NYC as undocumented immigrants. This is one of those stories that will stay with readers for awhile. ( )
This memoir tells the story of a child whose parents brought her to the United States at a very young age. They were undocumented, and their lives were very hard -- so hard that they twisted and fractured relationships within the family. It's vividly written, and is difficult at times to read. The "happy ending" -- the author ends up as a lawyer in her own firm -- sounds like the traditional immigrant rags-to-riches story. But the rags part is a reminder of how hard the United States can be to the non-priviliged. ( )
Maybe 3.5 stars. I wrote some notes while reading it - "Chapter One and Two, slow start, choppy"; after that, "a bit too much time spent in the bathroom - not sure of the point". I've read a lot of memoirs from everywhere over the last couple of years. I don't remember it at all, which tells me it probably wasn't very good. ( )
