In this timely book, award-winning author Kevin DeYoung challenges each of us -- the skeptic and the seeker, the certain and the confused -- to take a humble look at God's Word regarding the issue of homosexuality. After examining key biblical passages in both the Old and New Testaments and the Bible's overarching teaching regarding sexuality, DeYoung responds to popular objections raised by Christians and non-Christians alike, making this an indispensable resource for thinking through one of the most pressing issues of our day. - Back cover.… (mer)

DeYoung writes a helpful and concise answer to what the Bible teaches about homosexuality. I found his exposition on the key texts very good. While DeYoung works hard to be pastorally sensitive, there were moments where the tone was strident and forceful which would make it difficult for this to be the first book I put in the hands of someone identifying as gay. Nevertheless, it is something I would recommend for the majority of our church. ( )

Synopsis/Noteworthy:

26 Revisionists claim Eve solved problem of aloneness not incompleteness
27 ...a suitable helper equal but also opposite
32 ...complementary nature of creation itself: heaven and earth, sun and moon, morning and evening, day and night, sea and dry land, plants and animals
45 ...there is a clear progression in Lev 18 and 20 of sexual sin deviating in increasing measure from male-female monogamy
49 The most detailed and significant treatment of homosexuality is found in the first chapter of the most important letter in the history of the world.
55 According to Paul's logic, men and women who engage in same-sex sexual behavior--even if they are being true to their own feelings and desires--have suppressed God's truth in unrighteousness.
62 The English translations are almost always right, especially when they basically say the same thing.
91 Gluttony is a favorite device to throw into the rhetorical mix because it is one of the so-called Seven Deadly Sins and it seems like one we all commit.
91 C. S. Lewis...has the demon Screwtape note how persnickety old ladies--the kind who always turn aside whatever is offered and always insist on a tiny cup of tea--can be just as guilty of gluttony by putting their wishes first, no matter how troublesome they may be to others.
109 Whatever the situation, you can't help but think, "Why would God do this?"
111 Our own sense of desire and delight, of or pleasure and of pain, is not self-validating.
117 You see what God has to say about homosexuality, but your heart doesn't utter the same sentiments. God's word says it's sinful; your heart says it feels right. God's word says it's abominable; your heart says it's delightful. God's word says it's unnatural; your heart says it's totally normal. Do you see there is a clear divide between what God's word says and how your heart feels?
119 How did we come to feel that the most intense emotional attachments and the most fulfilling aspects of life can only be expressed with sexual intimacy?
*121 We'd do well to reconsider the doctrine of divine simplicity...
125 To not participate in these pagan rituals was to invite ridicule and marginalization.

144 …as more and more Christians who experience same-sex attraction are, in a powerful picture of God’s grace, choosing to live celibate lives rather than violate the clear teaching of Scripture.

It had many good points and does an excellent job of quoting the Bible for relevant references. I did not agree with the book 100% but I do believe it is a good book to help people see what the Bible says about this issue. ( )

This is a really good resource on the title. He has two parts: looking at the five key passages ( Gen 1-2; Gen 19; Lev 18, 20; Rom 1; ITim 1), and then addressing the main counterarguments (the Bible talks about it very little; a better kind of homosexuality; gluttony and divorce; it isn't fair; wrong side of history; God is a God of love). He writes with a lot of compassion, but also resolution. He deals only in an appendix with gay marriage.
Other books that might be good: Defending Marriage: Twelve Arguments for Sanity by A. Esolen; works by Robert P. George; The Intolerance of Tolerance by Carson; What is Marriage? by Ryan Anderson and RP George.
This would be a good item for honest inquiry from the other side. ( )
