La plupart des gourous, des philosophes et des chefs spirituels étaient des hommes. Cependant, dans ce livre fascinant et stimulant pour la pensée, Anne Bancroft a exploré l'approche féminine du mysticisme en examinant les méthodes et les enseignements de quinze femmes actuelles, chacune ayant pénétré de façon personnelle et originale ce que l'auteur appelle la "vérité dépassant les limites de l'ordinaire". Certaines, par exemple Evelyn Underhill, ont exploré cette vérité à travers le christianisme, d'autres à travers le bouddhisme, comme c'est le cas de Joanna Macy. > Les grands Hommes sont légion dans l’histoire du monde. Les femmes, en revanche, ont rarement droit à ce qualificatif élogieux. Il faut donc saluer la sortie de deux livres, Femmes de lumière (Éd. de la Table Ronde) et Femmes en quête d'Absolu, grâce auxquels nous faisons connaissance de femmes remarquables, ayant toutes eu une recherche et un itinéraire spirituels dignes d’être racontés.
Le premier livre se présente surtout sous la forme d’interviews, menés par deux grands reporters, Rachel et Jean-Pierre Cartier, ce qui rend la lecture de ce livre particulièrement vivante. Ainsi, des femmes telles que Maguy Lebrun, Chiara Lubich, Catherine Delorme, nous racontent leurs quêtes du sens et nous entraînent sur les pistes sacrées du soufisme, du catholicisme, du bouddhisme tibétain et de l’hindouisme. Trois femmes, Denise Desjardins, Annick de Souzenelle et Eva de Vitray-Meyerovitch, représentant chacune une tradition religieuse, complètent ces interviews, en répondant à la question qui sous-tend tout ce livre : Est-ce que le monde à venir sera vraiment marqué par la résurgence des valeurs féminines?
Le second livre, Femmes en quête dAbsolu (Ed. Albin Michel), d’Anne Bancroft, explore l’approche féminine du mysticisme à travers l’expérience de quinze femmes mystiques du XXe siècle, chacune ayant pénétré de façon personnelle et originale ce que l’auteur appelle “la vérité dépassant les limites de l’ordinaire”. De Simone Weil à Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, ces femmes nous apprennent comment elles sont parvenues par des voies différentes, à réaliser l’union de l’esprit et de la chair, de l’intemporel et du relatif, du sacré et du soi.
