This is a more non-traditional graphic novel but is very creative in the format of the text and illustrations. The story is about a girl who is writing in almost a diary format – who talks about her life and her desire to leave Earth. She talks about the different reasons why and the reasons she would regret leaving. The format looks like a main text, with big illustrations, lists, and other visuals to support it. I would use this graphic novel to encourage personal writing as a way to discover more about oneself, and one’s motives. More generally, I would use this graphic novel to inspire ideas in my students pertaining to their own writing. I like the way the author changes the font when something the main character has to say is important, because it draws special attention from the reader to that big idea. Students can draw from these kinds of techniques in their own writing as well, such as emphasizing a word or phrase by making it bigger or underlining it, or changing its font. Students are encouraged to accompany main text with illustrations, and this graphic novel is a perfect example of this. For example, the main character very well could’ve simply described with text what her best friend is like – but as well as a text description, she includes a labeled diagram of her friend, as well as drawn pictures of what her friend does. This helps the reader step into the text and better visualize what the main character is talking about. Elise Gravel is one of my favourite children's authors. Her books are filled with incredibly amazing, unusual, and silly characters. I especially love how her stories have female main characters who are scientists, cranky, investigators, silly, gross, and all those other traits picture book authors tend to place on male characters. Her books empower our girls to be who they want to be. If they want to keep stage, smelly whatnots as pets, then all the more power to them. In Olga: We're Out Of Here, published by Harper Childrens, Elise Gravel continues the story of Olga and her pet Olgamus named Meh. In this instalment, Olga is tired of living on Earth and has decided to head off into space to avoid all of the annoying humans on Earth. Although there are some humans she likes, most she could do without. She just loves to spend time with Meh. When Meh starts acting strangely, Olga is determined to figure things out. She researches and observes and even takes Meh to a vet. To Olga's delight, Meh has a very exciting surprise in store. This graphic novel is perfect for fans of Captain Underpants or Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Written with a ton of graphics, word splashes, and text bubbles, it's the perfect choice for reluctant or emergent readers who are looking for a chapter book that is not at all intimidating. We have been enjoying many of her wonderful picture books and are laughing out loud following Olga and Meh's adventures. You really should check out Elise Gravel's work online at http://elisegravel.com/en/. Her work is so phenomenal and she creates some incredible posters, free to download for teachers and parents to empower the young people in their lives. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Oh, Meh gets sick with a very obvious sickness, if you've ever had a pet who is in the situation. You know before the reveal what's wrong. The entire time they talk about weird pimples on her tummy and other things that hint at what's going on. By the end of the book there are eight little surprises.
I enjoyed book two much better than book one, book one felt a little bit more mean spirited than this one has. I feel like it had to get the mean Spirit out and then it would become cute and friendly. And it has. ( )
