“Unholy Murder” is book seven in the “Young Tennison” series, but each case is separate. There is a nice balance between the events, the police procedures, and the people who are doing the investigations. Readers get to know the characters, their personalities, their quirks as well as follow a compelling investigation to find out “whodunit.”

It is 1982, Detective Jane Tennison had quite a volatile history during her previous service in the Met, and she sometimes feels that people are just out to get her. Since she cannot change what happened, it is time to move on to a new assignment. She is a fighter, not a quitter, and she wants to make inspector. It is time for Tennison to communicate better and work as part of a team.
The police are called to a construction site, a former convent, now apartments, where more are being built. A dull day j got exciting when the crew uncovered a coffin. The work comes to a stop as the team tries to discover if this is a “proper consecrated” graveyard or an intentional burial to cover up a murder. Every day of lost work costs money, so there is pressure to move quickly; the body must be identified and the death reconciled before construction can resume. The original convent and the chapel are historic listed sites, but yet little is known about their actual operation. The team uncovers multiple events from the past that suddenly become connected, and the investigation becomes complicated.
The characters are multifaceted, and there is a nice balance between everyday activities, friendly banter, and serious investigation. This is a complex case, and details unfold slowly, layer by layer. I received a review copy of” Unholy Murder” from Lynda La Plant and Bonnier Zaffre Publishers. The book is evenly paced and organized; however, there are plenty of unusual developments and surprise connections in this challenging case that keep readers turning the pages ( )

When a coffin with the body of a young nun is dug up at a construction site of an historic convent, it opens a can of worms, which leads Detective Tennison and her team to unearth some really unholy and loathsome acts!

The suspense of the case intensifies as Detective Tennison prowls her way in the investigation, determines to leave no stone unturned!

I highly recommend this UNHOLY MURDER to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers - one won’t be disappointed!
The phenomenal Lynda La Plante, with her wealth of knowledge in police procedural and forensic science, has masterfully crafted this captivating and thrilling UNHOLY MURDER, in which she smoothly takes her readers through the suspenseful investigation and murder-solving.
I would like to thank BookishFirst for giving me this fascinating opportunity to enjoy this gripping thriller! ( )

UNHOLY MURDER is Book #7 in Lynda La Plante’s Young Tennison series.
If you are familiar with Ms. La Plante, you know what a wonderful (and prolific) writer she is. She is maybe best known for her original TV script of ‘Prime Suspect’. She has also written many series - Prime Suspect, Young Tennison, Jack Warr, Widows, Anna Travis and others.
If you like crime dramas, police procedurals with a lot of human interest, Ms. La Plante is your go-to-author.
In UNHOLY MURDER, DS Jane Tennison and DC Simon Boon respond to a call of a coffin dug up at a building site. The site is on the grounds of a former convent and orphanage and the body inside the coffin is that of a young nun.
Many questions evolve - Identity? Time period? Location of coffin? Cause of death? Murder? a cover up by the Archdiocese?
I quite enjoyed this particular title. The characters, the plot, the back stories, the forensic work - all the pieces just came together. ***** ( )

I have enjoyed many of Lynda La Plante’s British police procedurals however Unholy Murder was a miss for me. The seventh in the Jane Tennison series, La Plant does an admirable job of filling in the backstory and thus can be read as a stand alone book. However, the dialogue, characters, plot - too simple, too obvious. Points for an attempt to incorporate many elements to muddy the waters but easy to see where this was going and how it was going to finish.

Thank you NetGalley and Zaffre for a copy ( )

WOW. I was so in love with this book it’s hard for me to even describe it. From the author Lynda La Plante (famous for her PBS Masterpeice mystery ‘Prime Suspect’) comes an absolutely chilling murder mystery which takes place in London. When builders are working on an old convent they find an unexplained coffin with the body of a young nun. If that wasn’t spooky enough when they open it they fight scratches on the inside of the lid.. which only means one thing. The nun was buried alive. This was all I needed to know to be sure this was a book for me. Was it really a nun or was the body dressed like a nun? Why was a poor nun murdered? And why was she seemingly buried alive? So many questions! I really enjoyed the way La Plante built up the suspense and writing style made it near impossible to put the book down. This is my first time reading anything by this author and I’m so glad I did!
