Detta är en historiebok som berättar för dig vad du redan vet (i alla fall om du är brittisk och har gått i brittisk skola): allt i den behandlar minnesvärda saker, och minnesvärda kungar. Ett exempel:
Canute, an experimental king This memorable monarch, having set out from Norway to collect some Danegeld, landed by mistake at Thanet, and thus became King.
För den som inte gått i brittisk skola, och inte heller har en djup känsla för vilka som var Dåliga kungar, gå rhumorn måhända en över huvudet ibland: man kan inte minnas det man inte lärt sig. Å andra sidan fungerar saker som repetitionshumor (all upprepningshumors moder), den lätta besattheten med att visa England som främsta nation, och moraliska omdömen om kungar tämligen väl även för de okunniga. Även ordskämten kan gå hem, men det är svårare eftersom de oftast kräver att man vet vad som borde stått.
En översättning av 1066 and all that vore sannolikt omöjlig, men att överföra konceptet torde gå; detta gäller i princip även för läsning: behöver man översätta boken i huvudet så är det nog inte den man bör läsa, annat än som övning. Trevlig, men krävande. ( )
