"Fifteen years after the events of the Natchez Burning trilogy, Penn Cage is alone. Nearly all his loved ones are dead, his old allies gone. But Penn's self-imposed exile comes to an abrupt end when a brawl at a Bienville music festival triggers a shooting--one that nearly takes the life of his daughter Annie. Before the stunned populace can process the tragedy, an arsonist begins torching antebellum plantation homes in Bienville. I picked this book up because I have enjoyed previous books of his but this one does come in at a whopping 963 pages. By the time I came to read it I was a little daunted and so got the audiobook as well so that I could listen whilst I garden, clean, cook etc and read in bed at night (if I could hold the book up!).

The epic covers a vast array of themes; we have race, this is the south after all, family their past, present and future, MAGA, corruption, local politics and policing, history of the south and how civil wars are started, genetic diseases and military veterans. There are a lot of plots, too many to mention, but they do mostly come together at the end. The story is set over a few days when events and their consequences nearly tip the place over into war and not just between Black and White but between police departments, political friends and enemies and within families and all the while the rich are sitting in a well-appointed room watching it go on. As always, there is someone manipulating events for their benefit and this is the person who wants to enter the White House.

There were elements that didn't work quite as well such as the bear which was seen regularly and came to the aid of some of characters. It is the symbol of the area but was a little unbelievable. And then there was the range of emotions: a lot of bile rising, blood draining etc but I suppose with that many pages some things will be repeated.

It is a fascinating plot, one that we feel like we are never too far from at the moment, and that is scary. It is a thin thread that holds us together and long may it continue. I imagine that there are some people who will hate this book because of the political views expresed within it. ( )

In depth High Tension sequel. It explores many issues: race, slavery, sexual abuse. But it is anchored in contemporary events such as the January 6th insurrection. A long book but one well worth pushing through. ( )

A senseless shooting at a music festival is the start of civil unrest. A polarising right-wing would-be presidential candidate with a secret motivation is gaining traction. An apparently black domestic terrorist group are setting fire to plantation houses. Penn Cage is coping with disability, grief and is now watching his beloved home state falling apart. In order to save life as he knows it, Penn is being thrust into the fire again.
I really like Iles writing as he manages to make quiet brutal populist thriller material into beautifully written literature! This is a huge book but I savoured every page. The key is that Iles makes the reader think about America in a more reflective way and that is so great. ( )

Robert E. Lee White, internet sensation, has enough petition signatures to get him on every state as a presidential candidate. He has a polarizing effect on the nation and will pit Americans against each other. But, Penn understands what is about to happen and he does everything, including risking his life, to stop this madman.

Y’all know this is one of my favorite authors. And he has outdone himself with this one. Of course, I think I say that with every one of his books. But this book, especially the ending, had me all in knots! I was terrified with where this story was going to end up!

As in true Greg Iles fashion, he incorporates some of the best mix of good and bad southern characters. So, there is also racism, politics, arson, and murder thrown into this unique tale you do not want to miss.

Now, as I always say about his books. These are smart reads. You cannot skim. If you do, you will miss something vital and have to backtrack (speaking from experience!) This novel, as with all his novels, you need to pay attention to every detail because it will be the detail you need to know! Trust me!

Need a good southern novel with a little bit of everything…THIS IS IT!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review. ( )
