Boxes are falling from the sky. What is in them? people 23 and older are getting them and when they open the box, there's a string. Some are short, some are long. What is the meaning behind the length of the strings? ( )
This book was a real delight, a wonderful treat that took me several days to finish only because things like work, sleep, and life stuff kept getting in the way. I could easily have finished it in a day if I’d had a free day to spend.
The set-up is basically this; one day every adult on the planet gets a box with a string in it, the string is the total measure of their lifespan. No one knows where the strings came from or what they mean, the one thing the world can agree on are the strings impeccable accuracy. Scientists compare and study the strings and are able to calculate (to within a month or so) the exact age at which you’ll die based on your string. This of course throws the whole world into upheaval, as suddenly, one of the most pressing questions “when will I die?” can have a definite answer. The book explores this world changing development with remarkable skill and depth. The book follows eight vaguely interconnected characters, of different backgrounds and string lengths, as they try to lead meaningful lives in this new, frightening world. The author juggles these perspectives and stories with charming skill, each character has an interesting perspective to explore and seeing how they work together was truly interesting and remarkable.
This book was, of course, rather heavy at times. I could see it being a great book to discuss with a group pf friends or a book club as everyone will have different opinions about the strings, about what constitutes a full life. In the end, this book was a lot of fun to read and very moving and thought provoking, I’d recommend it to almost anyone. ( )
A little speculative fiction, but quite a thought provoking idea! So many things happen politically and morally in response to those who know if they're a short stringer or long. Would I want to know the measure of my life? ( )

I tried to be a good son." Hank leaned back slowly in his chair. "You know, I watched a lot of people come to the end, and everyone around them kept begging them to fight. It takes real strength to keep on fighting, and yes, usually that's the right answer. Keep fighting, keep holding on, no matter what. But sometimes I think we forget that it also takes strength to be able to let go."
Jack thought that he knew what loneliness felt like, a perpetual outsider among his kin, a mistake. But that was always the absence of love. Here, with Javi, it was the loss. And losing something felt so much harder, so much lonelier, than simply going without.
So Ben sat there, on top of a storage trunk, in the arms of his mother, under the hand of his father, and everything that needed to be said was said in the silence, in their touch.
I'm sorry, Amie. I'm sorry for the shock that this letter will bring, and I'm sorry because you once asked me to write about little things, and this is perhaps the biggest thing of all. But you also said that we could each find our own measure of happiness. A stranger recently told me that she didn't want to waste any time feeling sad. She just wanted to live as much as possible. And I think that's as good a measure as any.
"I challenge everyone to do the same, to stand up against the people in your life who are acting unjustly. Help them see that we are all the same, all connected. We are all strung together."
Maura thought that maybe it would be nice to be married, to have something that felt solid and lasting in her otherwise upended life. Maybe, despite everything her string had stolen, this was one thing she could still have.
