Arthur Rimbaud's invented "Splendide-Hotel," "built in the chaos of ice and of the polar night," provides the occasion for Sorrentino's imaginative meditation on letters and language. The focus initially appears random but the associations become gradually associated and focuses until thematically the work becomes a wonderful palindrome. When the majesty of such is realized, one is tempted to rent one's clothing in anguish, why not more?
