This Science book contains photos which are of animals, vegetables or minerals. It is extremely basic, geared for k-1sth. There are no words. There is not a lot of use of scientific theorem in play here. It would basically be used for the student to identify the object and what classification. It would be used to engage students as to find out what they do know. ( )

This book is actually more like a game than a book. I would go through this book after teaching children about minerals, vegetables, and animals because the book does not consist of any information, The book has many photographs of animals, vegetables, and minerals. I feel like it would be a very engaging book/game for young children because they love to look at the photographs rather than the actual text. ( )

I thought that this book was okay. I liked the photographs, and I loved the guessing game aspect of the book, but some of the pictures were a little tricky, and the book lacked a key. Additionally, readers are supposed to guess whether items in the photos are animals, minerals, or vegetables; however, vegetables are typically thought of as being food, and as I don't know anyone who eats cotton, sunflowers, or thistles, I think that simply using the term "plant" might have been more appropriate. I liked the concept of this book, but I wish that the author had included a key and perhaps even an explanation of why these things fall into the categories that they do (e.g. is honey an animal, vegetable, or mineral, and why?). I think that kids might get very confused if reading this book on their own (I was confused about some of the pictures), so I would definitely recommend using this book to prompt classroom discussions as opposed to having students look at it independently. Four stars for the amazing, even for Hoban, photos. But these puzzles were tricky, and I'd like to see a key. Does every parent know that natural sponges are 'animal?' Is an empty seashell or eggshell animal or mineral, and do you want have that sophisticated discussion with preschoolers? ( )

This is a picture book based on the 20 questions prompt of animal, vegetable, or mineral. There is no text. This would be a great book to discuss classifications of living and non-living things in a science class. I would consider getting this book for my class. ( )
