For more than a hundred years humans, dwarves, gnomes and elves lived together in relative peace. But times have changed, the uneasy peace is over and now the races once again fight each other - and themselves: dwarves are killing their kinsmen, and elves are murdering humans and elves, at least those elves who are friendly to humans . . . Into this tumultuous time is born a child for whom the witchers of the world have been waiting. Ciri, the granddaughter of Queen Calanthe, the Lioness of Cintra, has strange powers and a stranger destiny, for prophecy names her the Flame, one with the power to change the world - for good, or for evil . . . Geralt, the witcher of Rivia, has taken Ciri to the relative safety of the Witchers' Settlement, but it soon becomes clear that Ciri isn't like the other witchers. As the political situation grows ever dimmer and the threat of war hangs almost palpably over the land, Geralt searches for someone to train Ciri's unique powers. But someone else has an eye on the young girl, someone who understand exactly what the prophecy means - and exactly what Ciri's power can do. This time Geralt may have met his match.… (mer)

Well, that was disappointing.

After two great short story collections, effectively introducing everyone's favorite witcher Geralt, his womanizing buddy Dandelion and his troubling love interest Yennefer, we arrive at the first novel in the series, written before the collections bust set after them. I was lucky enough to begin my journey through Sapkowksi's fascinating fantasy landscaped with the two collections since this book would have made me hesitate about continuing with the following books.

Everything movies at a slow pace; the story and the characters are confined into just a few boring settings, and most of the story is spent on having characters talk with each other about politics, war, women, magic and loads and loads of unrelated subjects. Gone are the monster-hunting escapades, the surprising twists and the clever dialogue. Everything is replaced by mundane chitchat and a story that barely moves forward. Sapkowksi introduces the basic plotline in the first few chapters but then doesn't do anything to move that said plot forward during the rest of the book. The ending feels anti-climactic, like Blood of Elves was intended as one, overly long introduction to the actual adventure.

The saving grace of the novel is Sapkowki's sharp humor, his distinct characters, and his lively fantasy world. He also has a nick of writing compelling female characters, Yennefer and Triss in particular, even if I was more annoyed than fascinated by Ciri in this novel. Dandelion was a whole lot more enjoyable here than in the short stories. Geralt, however, feels like a supporting character in his own story.

Not the greatest beginning of the main Witcher storyline, bu interesting enough for me to want to read the next entry at some point. ( )

A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don’t miss it!

Verily I say unto you, the era of the sword and axe is nigh, the era of the wolf's blizzard. The Time of the White Chill and the White Light is nigh, the Time of Madness and the Time of Contempt: Tedd Deireadh, the Time of End. The world will die admist frost and be reborn with the new sun. It will be reborn of the Elder blood, of Hen Ichaer, of the seed that has been sown. A seed which will not sprout but will burst into flame.
Ess'tuatha esse! Thus it shall be! Watch for the signs! What signs these shall be, I say unto you: first the earth will flow with the blood of Aen Seidhe, the Blood of Elves...

The town was in flames.

The Witcher series of books was published in English in a different order to its original Polish publication. In internal chronology, it consists of two books of short stories (published in Poland in inverse chronological order), followed by 5 novels following a linked arc. The final book written then takes place during the time of the first short story collection.
