Summary:
This is a folktale about a prince looking for a wife because he was bored. Then a girl came to his door saying she was a princess and asked if she could stay the night. So he did and he wanted to test her to see if she was a princess.
Personal Reaction:
I love this story which was my first time reading it. I would have loved to have read this when I was a little girl because I loved being a princess. I also loved the pictures it gave you a sense of the story that was not being told by the words.
Classroom Extensions:
1)Make paper books of their favorite folktale or fair tale.
2) Prince and Princess day where we practice our manners such as greeting properly, table manner, and holding the door for princess'.

Summary:
This story involves a Prince who is on the hunt for a Princess to marry. He searches and searches but can not seem to find a single Princess. He is surprised with a Princess who shows up at his palace but can he trust her? He gives her one big test to find out.

Personal Reaction:
I have enjoyed this story since i was a little kid. Although there have been other versions in which i prefer more, I still think that this is a good story to keep in the classroom. It can help to show students not to judge. This is because the dirty/muddy girl who showed up at the Prince's door was a Princess.

Classroom Extension Ideas.

1. This book can be used when in a lesson to show your students not to judge a person by there appearances. The teacher can have the students create their own princess's using paper plates yarn, googly eyes and markers.

2. After reading this book to the class you can allow the students to come sit on a seat which has a pea underneath a pillow and show the students how hard it must have been to feel a pea underneath all of the mattresses and quilts. ( )

Summary- A Prince is dying to meet and fall in love with a princess. One day a young beautiful lady comes to his castle and claims that she is a princess and she needs a place to stay for the night. The Prince wants to make sure what she claims is indeed true. He places a single pea on the princess’s bed. He then covers the pea with twenty mattresses and twenty quilts. The next day he asked the princess how she slept and replied with only one complaint. That she felt as though she was sleeping on top of a boulder. The prince knew right then that she was indeed a princess because he knew that a princess would have to have the best and most comfortable bed in the land. He proposed to her and they lived happily ever after.

Response- I enjoyed this book, it was well illustrated and it was very easy to read. It would be great to give to kindergarteners or children who are just starting to read. It is also a decent read aloud. I also enjoyed the size of the book, it wasn’t very big but it was a perfect size for this story.

Classroom- If you were doing a lesson plan over the letter “P” this book would be great because not only one word in the title, but two words start with the letter P. It would also be rather entertaining to act out the story in a way. You could make up a mattress or blankets and have the girls and boys lay on it and see if they could feel the object underneath all the blankets. They could then determine whether they are princes or princesses.

Summary: A prince was wanting to get married, but could not find a princess. One day a young, beautiful girl had came to the castle asking for a place to stay. He had said OK and while he was getting her room ready, he had put a small pea under her mattress. He had said that if she found the pea then he would marry her. The young girl had slept very uncomfortably because she thought there was a pea under her mattress. Then the prince had asked her to marry her and lived happily ever after! =]

Personal: This book was a typical fairy tale story for little girls that loves happy endings in a castle and wants the same for them!

Classroom: With this book, I can have the students count the amount mattress's the prince had put on the bed before the young girl had to sleep on it. Could use this as part of a math lesson.

The Princess and the Pea is about a prince looking for his princess. A young maiden covered in mud shows up to his door one evening and decides to let her stay the night in his spare room. He wants to see if she is a true princess so he puts one single pea under her bottom mattress and adds 20 mattress and 20 quilts on top of it. The next morning he asks how she slept and she said she felt like she was sleeping on a boulder. Right away he knows that this is his princess.

I really liked this book. I had seen the play of this story my first year at Cameron. Of course the play was a bit different. I feel like this would be a good story for younger kids. The pictures were very detailed. The story was easy to follow.

For classroom activites, I would have the class color a picture of a princess on top of a very tall bed with a small pea on the bottom. For another activity I would give each of the children a piece of construction paper and either different color strips of construction paper of odds and ends of fabric and let them glue them on the construction paper in a stack like the bedding is described in the story along with a small green bead glued on the bottom of the strips to represent the pea.
