Poor Suze has to get a summer job. Sleepy gets her one at the hotel where he works and she ends up a hotel babysitter for the summer. She ends up the favorite of a married couple who have two children--a snarky (and cute) teenager her age and the little boy she babysits. Jack, the little boy, doesn't like to go outside, doesn't swim, doesn't have fun as far as Suze can tell and she decides to change this, mostly out of boredom and a desire to be at the pool for part of the summer. The reason Jack doesn't want to go outside is becasue, like Suze, he sees ghosts. Suze shows him not to be afraid, teaches him to swim, and becomes quite the hero to his neglectful parents.

Meanwhile, Maria, the woman Jesse was supposed to marry is coming around threatening Suze, telling her to get her stepfather to stop diggin the hole for their new hot tub or else. Turns out she wanted them to stop digging because she didn't want Jesse's body to be found. Of course it is and of course Suze ends up with yet another date (this time with Paul, Jack's older brother) ruined by coming home and seeing the remains then vomiting against the side of her house. Between Maria's threats and haunting and Paul's persistence, and the fear that Jesse will move on now that his body has been discovered Suze has way more problems than a summer job. ( )

Suze Simon is forced to work a summer job by her stepfather, Andy. So her stepbrother Jake gets her a pretty swank job as a hotel babysitter at the Pebble Beach Hotel and Golf Resort. The pay is good, the job is relatively easy, and there's plenty of eye candy—like Paul Slater, the big brother of her usual charge, Jack, a particularly weird looking and whiny 8 year old boy. While she finds Paul really interesting, she feels like she's cheating on Jesse. She doesn't feel so bad about it when she realizes little Jack is a Mediator, too. Jesse is difficult and secretive about his past, as well.

As Suze helps Jack Slater realize Ghosts don't mean to do any harm, but they just want help to go to the afterlife, he becomes more confident, and even a normal kid.

Suze's plans for the summer are interrupted when her stepfather and stepbrother dig up something in the backyard- letters from a Maria de Silva to her fiance,Hector de Silva. But Maria doesn't want them to find the letters and reppeatedly tries to stop them, even threatening Suze. This is because in her mind, if the people knew the truth about Jesse's murder, she'll no longer be regarded as a respecful lady. Suze, then faces a dilema: if they find out the reason Jesse has died, he will probably the semi life he has been leading for 150 years, and move on.

In spite of that, she tries to give those letters to the Historical Center, where the conservator thinks Jesse was not murdered, but probably bailed out on his wedding. She notices Maria's picture, and a small portrait of Jesse. She is very upset, and as she comes to the hotel the following day, police men inform her that the conservator is dead and that Hector de Silva's portrait is missing. Paul stops them from inquiring her, and she finally concedes to go out on a date with him.

Turns out he was trying to distract her while Maria convinced Jack to exorcise Jesse, claiming that he was bothering her. As Suzan gets home, Brad (Aka Dopey) and Andy had unearthed a skull, Jesse's skull. She throws up her dinner and tries to comfort herself with the thought that Jesse had promissed her he wouldn't disappear if they found out the reason of his death, but he never shows up. She finds out what happened when an excited Jack calls her informing he exorcised the ghost.

Suze is horrified. She is attacked by Maria de Silva and Felix Diego, her late husband, who helped kill Jesse. They try to kill her, but give her a concussion, by throwing her in the hole that is going to be the pool. At work, she discovers that Jack was approached by a beautiful ghost lady who told him how to do a exorcism to send Jesse to the next world, and convinces him to do her own exorcism. As she thinks, she has a soul, therefore, her sould could go and fetch Jesse.

Father Dom arrives as she is about to do it, and finally agrees on doing a "proper exorcism" in the Mission. He warns her against persuading Jesse with her female attributes, however, or keeping Jesse against his will. She has thirty minutes to go find him and come back, otherwise she will die. Jack arrives in the last minute with the rope to tie around her waist, and help her get back.

Suze does finds Jesse on the other side, and he is puzzled, as he thought she was the one who had sent him off. As they are going back, Suze's rope is cut. Paul appears and taunts Suze and Jesse, and the ghost punches him. They barely make it back to the Mission, only to find Maria and Felix Diego attacking Father Dominic. Suze finally manages to exorcize Maria de Silva and Felix Diego, and Jesse decides to stay in the living world.

The Slaters leave the hotel, leaving Suze a huge tip and some cryptic letters. As Suze goes up, she finds Jesse wanting to talk. She says she does not want to talk, for fear of confessing her feelings, but Jesse finally kisses her.

PLOT OR PREMISE:
Suzannah is a mediator -- she helps ghosts move on from this plane to the next. But when she's not embracing her sixth sense, she's earning money as a staff babysitter at a hotel/resort and dreaming about Jesse who haunts her current home. Then she meets trouble in the form of spoiled brat Jack who can also see ghosts, but doesn't know that ghosts are actually real and is instead three steps away from a nervous breakdown. Suze has to help him figure out his own role with ghosts, at the same time that she tries to figure out more of the mystery with Jesse's past life.
.
WHAT I LIKED:
I really liked the idea of finding newbies who don't know what they are supposed to do when it comes to ghosts -- hey, didn't they see the movie? I also still like the fact that Suze can actually interact with the ghosts (i.e. fight with them). The backstory for Jesse was cool, and knowing that Suze can move to another plane at least temporarily is really a good omen for future books. The interesting addition of negative mediators to counter-balance is very Tru Calling-ish, and we'll have to see how that plays out in future books.
.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
Some of the repeated teenage angst might sit well with teenage readers, but it gets really repetitive fast for older readers.
.
BOTTOM-LINE:
Oh, no, it's ghosts again!
.
DISCLOSURE:
I received no compensation, not even a free copy, in exchange for this review. I am not personal friends with the author, nor do I follow her on social media. ( )

Teenaged Suze can talk to ghosts, kick butt, *and* look good in a swimsuit. But when the ghost of her best friend is threatened by his murderers, she needs to go beyond her usual methods. This book doesn't fit the same pattern of the last three Mediator books, thankfully. It opens up new questions about the afterlife and Suze's powers. ( )
