He concludes that there is some constitutional support for a separation, but that this comes not from the First Amendment, which is merely a smoke screen for the true source - the provision against a religious test oath for those in the federal government.
Many of the states had such oaths, which eventually were done away with. North's conclusions are disturbing to conservative Christians, but perhaps paint things worse than they are considering that Christians have never had a perfect government to live under, anyway.
I'd give the book 5 stars, enthusiastically, except for the overly pessimistic tone and for its getting into a rather lengthy historiographical detour along the way. ( )
