Smoke and Sally Jensen are running the Sugarloaf Ranch and raising their adopted son, Bobby, with all seemingly peaceful. However, rarely does it stay that way around Smoke as is proven in the novel. Three formerly powerful men are behind bars, and each has a deep hatred for Smoke. Ralph Tinsdale, Victor Specter, and Olin Buckner blame their captivity and suffering on Smoke. Together they hatch a plan to escape and exact their revenge.
The men succeed and soon leave a trail of blood and destruction on their way to a town Smoke knows well. On the way, they begin to draw ruthless men to their gang like flies. When they take over Dubois, they set their plan in action and daringly capture Smokes wife Sally. To them she is the “cheese” that will draw Smoke to them. What they don’t count on is the many friends the mountain man has who come alongside to fight against the villains nor did they take into consideration Sally’s wits and strength.
When Smoke comes, he will bring to the three escaped prisoners a storm they aren’t likely to be able to recover from! When the dust settles, will any of the gang members face a judge in a courtroom? I really enjoyed the story and not just for action, adventure, and suspense. The way the author portrays Smoke and Sally’s marriage as filled with love, trust and romance touches the heart. Together these two face tough odds whether it is raising horses, children or fighting men bent on revenge. Grab a copy and enjoy the daring duo as they live life on the rugged frontier of Colorado!
