Agatha Christie sometimes does something comically unusual in her mystery novels. In this one, Hercule Poirot solves something like three other crimes as a side effect of solving a big one. Poirot is on holiday in Egypt when he makes the acquaintance of Linnet Doyle nee Ridgeway - a smart, beautiful and extremely rich newlywed on her honeymoon. If only her new husband wasn't also her best friend's ex lover. This was a fun read. I enjoyed the plot and the twists and turns it took. There were mysteries in mysteries and it was great. The plot was well paced and I liked the assortment of characters that appeared. In particular, I was quite fond of Mrs Allerton who wants her son to be happy but not with the woman she thinks he wants. “I shall have to talk to Miss Van Schuyler,” mused Mrs. Allerton. Tim grinned again. “She’ll snub you, Mother.” “Not at all. I shall pave the way by sitting near her and conversing, in low (but penetrating), well-bred tones, about any titled relations and friends I can remember. I think a casual mention of your second cousin, once removed, the Duke of Glasgow, would probably do the trick.” “How unscrupulous you are, Mother!” Christie, Agatha. I was pretty entertained by the whole Ferguson and Cornelia debacle too. “You’re right. She’s got spirit. She looks meek, but she isn’t. She’s got guts. She’s—oh, damn it, I want that girl. It mightn’t be a bad move if I tackled the old lady. If I could once get her thoroughly against me, it might cut some ice with Cornelia.” Christie, Agatha. I was amused that Ferguson's plan to get Cornelia onboard with marriage was to make her cousin dislike him and rant about him. “On the whole,” said Mr. Ferguson, “that’s not too bad for a start.” He leaned back in his chair, gazed at the ceiling, whistled, crossed his disreputable knees and remarked: “I’ll be calling you Cousin yet.” Miss Van Schuyler trembled with rage. And it was pretty funny anyway that Miss Van Schuyler (the cousin) is torn between hating him and liking him once she finds out he does have a title. “Thank you, Monsieur Poirot. If you would send Miss Bowers to me—I feel quite upset—that insolent young man.” “Rather eccentric, I’m afraid,” said Poirot. “Most of that family are. Spoilt, of course. Always inclined to tilt at windmills.” He added carelessly, “You recognized him, I suppose?” “Recognized him?” “Calls himself Ferguson and won’t use his title because of his advanced ideas.” “His title?” Miss Van Schuyler’s tone was sharp. “Yes, that’s young Lord Dawlish. Rolling in money, of course, but he became a communist when he was at Oxford.” Miss Van Schuyler, her face a battleground of contradictory emotions, said: “How long have you known this, Monsieur Poirot?” Poirot shrugged his shoulders. “There was a picture in one of these papers—I noticed the resemblance. Then I found a signet ring with a coat of arms on it. Oh, there’s no doubt about it, I assure you.” He quite enjoyed reading the conflicting expressions that succeeded each other on Miss Van Schuyler’s face. Finally, with a gracious inclination of the head, she said, “I am very much obliged to you, Monsieur Poirot.” Poirot looked after her and smiled as she went out of the saloon. Christie, Agatha. Well that and how much enjoyment Poirot gets out of messing with her head as well. Colonel Race also appears in this book. I really liked him and Poirot working together. I loved that they were always on the same wavelength or at least mostly on the same one and I was amused by their little facial expression exchanges. Overall a solid detective story. 4 stars. (  ) funstm | Jun 11, 2023 | I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kenneth Branagh who is excellent (he is also starring as Poirot in the upcoming movie adaptation). There were a lot of characters in this one, which means there are lots of possible suspects but also makes it harder to keep track of everyone. I liked how the mystery unfolded and how the reader gets to follow Poirot's train of thought as he figures out the case. I can see why this is considered one of Christie's best.
