An editor of romance novels goes to a cottage for the summer, taking her daughter and son-in-law. As she pencils scenes of romantic bliss she realizes the son-in-law is cheating on his wife, just as her ex-husband cheated on her. A story with a violent end.

Reading for Discussion Meeting in March 2018

I would have to describe this novel as "slight" (as in it's short and almost nothing happens) but it held my interest while I was answering the door constantly to trick or treaters.

Pauline (interestingly a freelance copy editor) spends the summer in the county, with her daughter Teresa, Teresa's husband Maurice, and their baby Luke living in the other half of their barn conversion. Pauline recalls her relationship with her ex-husband Harry and reluctantly realizes that history is repeating itself with Teresa and Maurice. It is hot, men behave badly, baby Luke potters around and then suddenly the ending is a bit of a shock. Perhaps not entirely unlikely, but nevertheless a bit of a cop out.

The sections describing Pauline's interactions with the Welsh author whose novel she is editing provide touches of welcome humour. Gently sad overall though. ( )

Heat Wave is about Pauline, a copy editor, her daughter Teresa and son-in-law Maurice are spending the summer in a rural village, while Maurice is doing research for a book on tourism. While he works Teresa cares for their toddler son, Luke, and spends time with Pauline. It seems like an idyllic summer until it becomes clear that something else is going on between Teresa and Maurice, and Pauline sees disturbing parallels to her own marriage. Penelope Lively then begins to do what she does best: craft a rich, multi-layered story. Pauline's life is revealed through her memories, often triggered by some event in the present. The emotional impact intensifies as the puzzle pieces come together, and the release at the end, while abrupt, is also fitting. I have yet to find a Penelope Lively novel that I don't like and am glad I have a couple more on my shelves. ( )

a wonderful book to read in another uncharacteristically hot july. Lively tells a story of infidelity amongst literary folk, and of literary folk displaced into a countryside that they experience as dilettante tourists. As the summer swells and burgeons, relationship patterns repeat for mother and daughter, mother and child, husband and girlfriend, until the weather and the tension bursts. Lively holds together a deceptively simple book in a way that makes it both reflective and convincing, when it could have been melodramatic.

There are lots of authors who I really enjoy who get me happily from one end of a book to the other, with all kinds of interesting plots, characters and relationships, but who never write a really memorable sentence that makes me sit back and think. Penelope Lively is not one of those authors. Her plots are great (usually) small scale dramas, the characters fabulous and the relationships very interesting, but on every page there are a handful of sentences you want to cut out and keep forever. Wonderful stuff! ( )
