After rescuing The Lady Tsilania and restoring the crystal key to its rightful place, Marcus Beltram settled into life with his family and put all thoughts of Alkademah behind him. That was until his four-year-old daughter revealed that she could see gateways. But these were not the silvery gateways Marcus was familiar with. Nor did they hum soothingly when Marcus listened for them. The gateways were now a roiling, dirty orange, like molten copper. And instead of the gentle hum he was accustomed to, they grated cruelly, like old machinery on the point of failure.Worse still, as he watched, one disappeared, and then another. The gateways were dying. And possibly so was Alkademah.Marcus knows he must try to reach Alkademah. How can he convince Dana that he has to return to a place that came close to claiming his sanity and his life? With the gateways dying, if Marcus should reach Alkademah, will he be able to find his way home?Find out in Return to Alkademah.… (mer)

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.
So many times, I read a book description that sounds interesting, only to discover that it's the 2nd (or 3rd or 5th) in a series and that the series needs to be read in order. Not the case with this one. While I'm sure that having read the first book would add colour to the story, it's absolutely not necessary. Chandler includes enough details that a new reader can feel up-to-speed quite easily, and yet I doubt returning readers will feel over-burdened. There are simply little nuggets scattered throughout to help the reader orient themselves when characters/situations are referenced from the past. There are a few giveaways that this is an early release copy (missing words or spelling errors here and there), but none so glaring or frequent that they pulled me out of the story.
The story itself is your basic "quest" story, but our hero is more mature than the average hero of such stories (he has a wife and child at home, and he desperately wants to return to them but his strong sense of duty spurs him to continue). One of the things I really enjoyed about the story is how characters respond when things don't go according to plan: there's very little whining, and there are no "surprise! everything is just peachy!" deus ex machinas (even though there absolutely could have been, & I almost thought Chandler was going there. Yay for subverting expectations!) Instead, there are real consequences for our characters and real struggles of conscience (although at least one is slightly more glossed over than I would expect to be the case in real life). More, please! ( )

I absolutely loved this book. It was unlike anything I expected. The author paints a beautiful story from start to finish. It’s not only interesting but it weaves correlations you wouldn’t expect. Bravo! ( )

After reading ‘Gateways of Alkademah’ ,the author offered a copy of the sequel when it came out; I am so glad I took him up on his offer.
The characters step right off the page they are so realistic.
Once again Alkademah is in trouble; but this time it is dying, and so are the gateways. Can Marcus save the world and still be able to make it home?
Very well done.
Looking for volume three already. ( )

I have been looking forward to this book, the sequel to “The Gateways of Alkademah”. I have been let down by many sequels in the past but this one did what very few do – it surpassed the original.

Like the original, “Return to Alkademah” is a classic quest story but in this story, there are two, perhaps even three quests. I sound a bit like Felko!

The author does a great job with character development, particularly Markus. I found the story carried me along from beginning to end.

If you enjoyed the first book, you would enjoy this one. Highly recommended. ( )

Marcus knows he must try to reach Alkademah. How can he convince Dana that he has to return to a place that came close to claiming his sanity and his life?

With the gateways dying, if Marcus should reach Alkademah, will he be able to find his way home?
