A dangerous alliance between a Vampyre bride and an Alpha Werewolf becomes a love deep enough to sink your teeth into in this new paranormal romance from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically and The Love Hypothesis.

Misery Lark, the only daughter of the most powerful Vampyre councilman of the Southwest, is an outcastagain. Her days of living in anonymity among the Humans are over: she has been called upon to uphold a historic peacekeeping alliance between the Vampyres and their mortal enemies, the Weres, and she sees little choice but to surrender herself in the exchangeagain...
Weres are ruthless and unpredictable, and their Alpha, Lowe Moreland, is no exception. He rules his pack with absolute authority, but not without justice. And, unlike the Vampyre Council, not without feeling. Its clear from the way he tracks Miserys every movement that he doesnt trust her. If only he knew how right he was.
Because Misery has her own reasons to agree to this marriage of convenience, reasons that have nothing to do with politics or alliances, and everything to do with the only thing she's ever cared about. And she is willing to do whatever it takes to get back whats hers, even if it means a life alone in Were territoryalone with the wolf.

Ehh. It was alright at best. I don't care about any of the characters. ( )

Light read but very enjoyable. Misery Lark has never had much say in her life. Lowe Moreland’s first choice was not to be the Alpha werewolf for his pack. They both have secrets, come from different species, and conflicting immediate goals. But maybe love will find a way…. ( )

Recommended: sure if you're interested
For a little bit of a mystery mixed with the paranormal lore, for romance that's distinctly interspecies without getting too weird, for a good time while you read it but that probably won't leave a big impression after

Thoughts:
Took a risk with this one for a group buddy read. In the end it was solidly... Ok. I enjoyed it while reading it and it didn't take long to get through, but now that I've finished it and a day or two has passed, I don't think I'll really have it on my mind for much longer.

Ultimately I feel like there wasn't a lot there, like there was a layer of ice thick enough for me to walk on and carry through the story, but if I had fallen through that ice it would have just been water below. Nothing substantial.

Also, paranormal interspecies sex with the obligatory kinks that go with it are not really my thing and that definitely held me at arm's length through this. 😅 The mystery investigation aspect of this was certainly more of my interest and focus, though again, if I drilled it down to just the plot points for that it would only be five or six bullet points of key scenes. 🤷‍♀️

The friendship that we see through memories and flashbacks of Misery and Serena were quite welcome, and I'm really happy that they were the strongest thread through this. It's rare for other people to truly matter in a story that has a focus on the romantic relationships. Usually friends get demoted to some kind of 2D foil or supporting character, but in this one Serena felt real and present even though she wasn't. xD

As for the resolutions and revelations, I was not very surprised by most of it, and that was fine. It was going where I thought it was going, and that made sense because it was the path that was laid out. Still, if you're in this for a crazy twist or complex reveal, you're in the wrong place.

So overall, yeah if you're interested go for it! It probably won't blow you away, but it probably won't really disappoint either. It'll be a fine thing to read and you'll enjoy doing it and then probably never think about it again. And honestly I think that's how most books are so it's not really a condemnation here.

TW/CW: Sex, violence, kidnapping, poison

RATING: 3/5

REVIEW: I am a fan of Ali Hazelwood’s other books, and also a fan of paranormal/fantasy romance, so I thought for sure that this would definitely be the book for me. I’m pretty disappointed to say that it really wasn’t.

This book is a slow-burn romance – you don’t get into any spice until a bit past the halfway point of this book. Which is good, actually, because the spice in this book really squicked me out. I am not in the least bit interested in reading about sexual acts that are specific to dogs (so gross).

The story itself, I enjoyed. I would have liked to get to know more about the vampyre culture, because we’re not really told much and kind of just have to figure it out for ourselves. The last minute twist I didn’t see coming, but I also thought it was done too quickly and I didn’t understand why it was necessary.

Anyway, this book isn’t bad (except for those spicy scenes which are gross and cringe), but I think I like her STEMinist books better. ( )

This novella was supposed to be my introduction to Ali Hazelwood. Many reviews from friends and other readers had been positive and glowing so my expectations were high, but this book let me down. Our female and male leads don't interact much even after their political marriage. If they do, it is brief with our male lead trying to haul his butt out of the room quicker than a snake coiled ready to strike.

And when our female lead was attacked, it didn't seem our male lead was remotely concerned about it. It seemed he wanted to feed into the Were's hatred for the Vampyre's. Maybe all of this could have just been me but I could not feel the connection our leads were supposed to have. It was not there and I think the author tried to push it toward the late stages of the book.

Honestly, I would have loved to say this was my favorite novel of the year but I would be lying. The book lacked character development and the ingredients needed to make a strong character bond between the two main leads. It was there not enough to make it worth the continual read. ( )

This war of ours, the one between the Vampyres and the Weres, began several centuries ago with brutal escalations of violence, culminated amid flowing torrents of varicolored blood, and ended in a whimper of buttercream cake on the day I met my husband for the first time.
