"When Barbara Van Laar is discovered missing from her summer camp bunk one morning in August 1975, it triggers a panicked, terrified search. Losing a camper is a horrific tragedy under any circumstances, but Barbara isn't just any camper, she's the daughter of the wealthy family who owns the camp--as well as the opulent nearby estate, and most of the land in sight. And this isn't the first time a Van Laar child has disappeared in this region: Barbara's older brother also went missing 16 years earlier, never to be found. How could this have happened yet again? Out of this gripping beginning, Liz Moore weaves a richly textured drama, both emotionally nuanced and propelled by a double-barreled mystery. Chasing down the layered secrets of the Van Laar family and the community working in its shadow, Moore's multi-threaded drama brings readers into the hearts of characters whose lives are forever changed by this eventful summer: Barbara's wounded, grieving mother; the "townie" whose family makes a living off this land; the 13-year-old camper struggling to find her way; and the outsider tasked with seeing the bigger picture, and uncovering the truth."--… (mer)

This is a propulsive read with many interesting characters. In the early morning of 1975, Barbara Van Laar is discovered to have gone missing from her cabin at camp. Her well off family owns the camp, and sadly her elder brother, nicknamed Bear, also disappeared during a hike nearby some fourteen year prior, never to be found. This was a fascinating read as we got to know the sad story of Barbara and Bear's distressed mom, Alice, her less than kind father, and the many troubled members of the family. Meanwhile, young investigator Judyita is doing her best along with other of the police force to track down the whereabouts of Barbara. A mystery, a story of troubled families, friendships, and conflicting social circles. ( )

This was a riveting family saga and mystery that I could not put down. Set in the 1970s in the Adirondacks, the Van Laar family own a summer home and a summer camp program. Tragically their young son, Bear disappeared in 1961 while hiking with his grandfather. He was never seen again. Fourteen years later, Barbara, Bear's sister also vanishes from the camp. The story is very descriptive and partially reads like a survival guide. We are introduced to many different characters from the camp counselor, the flawed family of the Van Laars, Tracey who is Barbara's campmate, TJ the camp director and Judyta the female police inspector. This fast-paced novel was very well written. I highly recommend! I received a complimentary eBook from the publisher in exchange for a review. ( )

It’s rare when solid writing and a great, page-turning thriller with believable, well-drawn characters coalesce, but Liz Moore has done it (again) with The God of the Woods. In 1975, Barbara Van Laar disappears from her cabin at camp — a camp owned by her family and just down the road from their estate in the Adirondacks. It’s also the same place her brother disappeared from 14 years earlier. Seamlessly moving between times and characters, Moore follows the later investigation through a young female investigator — the first in the state — while sprinkling information from the 1961 incident. Any reader who enjoys thrillers and family sagas should reach for The God of the Woods as soon as possible — they will not be disappointed. ( )

In Liz Moore’s new novel, “The God of the Woods,” a pair of missing siblings spark a reckoning on the banks of an Adirondack lake... Moore’s novel is more than just a mystery about children lost in the woods. It concerns the relationships between parents and children and haves and have-nots..I wish Moore had painted the reprehensible Van Laars with more nuance; villains are better when we can see ourselves in them, after all. A few red herrings fall away without resolution, and there are some less-than-convincing details...These are small complaints. Moore’s portrayal of Alice’s maternal devastation is acutely, painfully real. And her fictional summer camp felt as vivid to me as my own
