In this unique history, Nancy Garden uses both fact and fiction to explore just what it has meant to be young and gay in America during the last fifty years. For each decade from the 1950s on, she discusses in an essay the social and political events that shaped the lives of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) people during that era. This isn't just a collection of short stories–it's a history lesson. Before each set of stories, 2 from each decade from the 1950s to today, there are a few detailed pages on what life was life for GLBT folks during that decade, with a particular focus on what it was like for teens. As you read through the stories, which are good in themselves, you can also see how societal attitudes, various laws, and political movements affected real people in those times. The stories give great snapshots of what life has been like for GLBT people in the latter half of the 20th century, and are a great lesson, not just for the GLBT community, but for everyone. ( )
