"A timely deep dive into cancel culture, an account of its dangers to all Americans, and the much-needed antidote from the team that brought you Coddling of the American Mind. Cancel culture is a new phenomenon, and The Canceling of the American Mind is the first book to codify it and survey its effects. From the team that brought you the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind comes hard data and research on what cancel culture is and how it works, along with hundreds of new examples showing the left and the right both working to silence their enemies. The Canceling of the American Mind will change how you view cancel culture. Rather than a moral panic, we should consider it a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status, and dominance. Cancel culture is just one symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to "win" arguments without actually winning arguments. After all, why bother refuting your opponents when you can just take away their platform or career? The good news is that we can beat back this threat to democracy through better citizenship. The Canceling of the American Mind offers concrete steps toward reclaiming a free speech culture, with materials specifically tailored for parents, teachers, business leaders, and everyone who uses social media. We can all show intellectual humility and promote the essential American principles of individuality, resilience, and open mindedness"--… (mer)

Working under the aegis of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, Lukianoff and Schlott describe a phenomenon that has become commonplace, especially in public schools and on college campuses: Say something with which someone disagrees, and not only won’t you be able to say it, but you’ll be punished for having a divergent opinion. The phenomenon is real, the authors assert, although many ascribe it to being corrected for being wrong and being aggrieved by the correction in the bargain. A reasonable case for attempting to bridge disagreements in a civil manner rather than via civil war.

We’re in a terrible spot, and everybody knows it. Americans on the right and left detest each other, excoriate each other and, with every flaring of rage, move further from any sense of pluralistic common cause. Citizens have lost confidence in officialdom. Fashionable ideologies that brook no good-faith dissent have surged into every corner of life. Make a minor demurral, even a joke, and you risk being subjected to the ghastly nullification rituals of what is called cancel culture.

Sometime around 2014, something big changed in America. It was as if a flock of demons was unleashed upon the world, and the first place they flocked to was American college campuses. -Foreword
On a sweltering summer day, we arrive at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. We were invited by a mysterious professor, a scholar of ancient Greece, to witness the unveiling of a newly discovered artifact. Out invitations cryptically promised "ancient wisdom that might help us understand the dysfunction of contemporary American society." -Introduction: Pandora's Toolbox
On October 6, 2022, an adjunct professor at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, became the target of the most brazen infringements on academic freedom in recent memory. Erika Lopez Prater showed her art history class a painting depicting the Prophet Mohammed - and lost her job because of it. -Case Study, Hamline University
