"Like an illuminated manuscript, this extraordinarily beautiful book is both an exquisite art-work in itself and an object of profound meditation. It is based on a revered collection, long considered lost, of three-hundred-year-old Tibetan thangkas: elaborate paintings that portray a philosophy of healing based on Buddhist beliefs, Ayurvedic practices, and ancient shamanic traditions - works that still have much to teach us today. Rendered by Nepal's foremost traditional artist, Romio Shrestha, using the age-old technique of painting with rich minerals such as gold, lapis, and garnet, these breathtakingly complex and brilliant works reward the minutest contemplation." "This important book is also a practical guide to our search for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Tibetan scholar Ian Baker guides us through the paintings, unfolding their invaluable secrets about the remedy and prevention of myriad illnesses. With insights into such "contemporary" ailments as stress, allergies, and heart disease, and illuminated chapters on sexual alchemy, rejuvenation, and Tantric yoga, this book offers an inspirational revisioning of conventional attitudes toward health care, disease, and healing." "The Tibetan Art of Healing is an unprecedented journey into health and transformation, an astonishing volume as timely and revolutionary as it is sumptuous and exuberant."--BOOK JACKET.… (mer)

Tibetan medicine is becoming better known in the Western hemisphere, and this lavishly illustrated volume makes a great contribution to the dissemination of Tibet's medical knowledge. This work features the luminous recreations of traditional medical thanka paintings by the contemporary Nepalese master painter Romi Shrestha. The accompanying text by Ian Baker, who has studies with Hilalayan healers, yogins, and lamas, for fifteen years, unlocks the symbolism of these images for us. -- Yoga World.

Product Description:

This volume is intended as an artwork in itself and an object of meditation. Based on a revered collection, long considered lost, of Tibetan "thangkas" - elaborate scroll paintings that portray a philosophy of healing based on Buddhist beliefs, Ayurvedic practices and ancient shamanic traditions - these works may still have much to teach us. Created by a traditional artist from Nepal, Romio Shrestha, using the ancient technique of painting with rich minerals such as powdered gold, and lapis lazuli, the works are intended for the minutest contemplation. Divided into sections illuminating the Tibetan Buddhist view of physiology, pathology, diagnosis and cure, the book demonstrates the processes that sustain, enhance and ultimately transform the life-force. It addresses contemporary ills, such as stress, allergies and heart disease, offering practical advice on treatment and prevention. Going beyond cure, a final section introduces more esoteric perspectives on the interaction of body and mind, presenting the body itself as a source of insight and revelation.

Impermanent and subject to both pain and pleasure, our bodies are the central focus for our experience as human beings.
Forward: Tibetan medicine is one of the greatest legacies of Tibetan Buddhist civilization.
Preface:Many people, including physicians, have become disillusioned by the prevailing materialistic interpretation of illness and health.
Introduction: The unique quality of Tibetan medicine lies not only in its clear commitment to healing the human body of illness and disease, but, equally, in its revelation of a bath in which body, mind and spirit can be liberated from the sufferings of conditioned existence.
