One of the great masterworks of science fiction, the Foundation novels of Isaac Asimov are unsurpassed for their unique blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building. The story of our future begins with the history of Foundation and its greatest psychohistorian: Hari Seldon. For twelve thousand years the Galactic Empire has ruled supreme. Now it is dying. Only Hari Seldon, creator of the revolutionary science of psychohistory, can see into the future--a dark age of ignorance, barbarism, and warfare--that will last thirty thousand years. To preserve knowledge and save mankind, Seldon gathers the best minds in the Empire--both scientists and scholars--and brings them to a bleak planet at the edge of the Galaxy to serve as a beacon of hope for future generations. He calls his sanctuary the Foundation. But soon the fledgling Foundation finds itself at the mercy of corrupt warlords rising in the wake of the receding Empire. And mankind's last best hope is faced with an agonizing choice: submit to the barbarians and live as slaves, or take a stand for freedom and risk total destruction.… (mer)

These are not really character-driven stories, although the protagonists are believable. The stories are all connected (in chronological order) and are about big ideas and powerful forces which direct galactic history. Since ideas take precedence, the stories can seem a little dry at times. However, this actually emphasizes the overall theme that individual people may just in the right place at the right time, and that social/economic/religious forces will shape the future regardless of them. Of course, the key is that no one can foresee the future with precision (except a small group of psycohistorians who bow out pretty early in the book). If someone could accurately foretell future events, they could then conceivably find a means of changing them. Foundation makes for an engaging and memorable read. ( )

I confess I would read this, as I was about to go to bed, often times being very tired (one of Asimov's bite-sized chapters a night). As the novel jumped forward in time I began to grasp less and less of what was going on. I guess I have to own that, but I think Asimov played his part too: his characters all have funny names and none speak with a distinctive voice.

Asimov's scientific humanism is I guess admirable, and as a sociologist I guess I should be flattered that Asimov pins the hopes of galactic civilization on social science. But his ambitions for "psycho-history", and the role he sees scientists playing in maintaining and protecting society, come off as awfully naive. ( )

An interesting book with interesting ideas. ( )

A fun and intelligent read. It’s packed with refreshingly competent central characters - albeit all men with apparently no personal lives. They take calculated high stakes risks to resolve crises.

Each story is subsumed within the Foundation’s narrative and proceeds through dialogue. If you’re looking for visceral, kinetic action of the “no match for a good blaster” type, it may not deliver for you.

The technology is either dated, or, breaks physical law. No matter. The sense of pent-up economic and historical forces uncoiling over multiple human generations is strong. How such dynamics can be cleverly identified and marshalled to achieve political ends (good or bad) by those smart and confident enough to do so, feels current. ( )

If you expect this to be about epic battles in space, light sabers and laser guns fights... forget it. Foundation is way better than that. Asimov introduces us to a variety of brilliant characters involved in political machinations, with an interesting mix of religion and science.
Many say this is a boring book, perhaps because they are used to today's science fiction, but I dare you to draw your own conclusions. ( )
