Many otherwise sound evangelical leaders, thinking that the only real enemy is Darwinism, are being seduced by the promise of progressive creationism. Its most prominent voice, astronomer Dr. Hugh Ross, has convinced many that here is a biblically sound way to accommodate the facts of science. With brilliant clarity, Jonathan Sarfati, author of the best-selling Refuting Evolution (1 and 2) has produced a comprehensive and ringing refutation of the position of 'progressive creationist' Hugh Ross, whose views are causing massive confusion about science and the Bible. This promises to be the most powerful biblical and scientific defense of a straightforward view of Genesis creation ever written. Ross is a skillful presenter of scientific evidences for the veracity of the Bible, yet he advocates the nontraditional views of progressive creationism, which claims such things as: Death, bloodshed, and disease existed before Adam and Eve. Noah's flood was only a local event. Man-like creatures existed before Adam and Eve, but had no spirit, and thus had no salvation.… (mer)

A comprehensive approach to counter the claims of old earth creationism, from both a biblical and scientific perspective. This is a must read for those who believe the claims of Hugh Ross that the secular interpretation of billions of years supports Creationism. This position is clearly an attempt to reconcile opposing interpretations that are mutually exclusive from a simple straightforward reading of scripture.

This is the best book on creationism I've read and I've read many on that subject. Dr. Sarfati takes the opposing arguments one by one and goes to the Bible to explain why he disagrees with them. That's one of the strong points of this book in fact, that the author begins with scripture and works his way out to support his position rather than beginning with a position and then trying to make the scripture fit it(as do the "old earth" and "theistic evolution" proponents). Dr. Sarfati is clearly very knowledgable in both science AND theology (again, something often lacking among the opponents of the young earth point of view) and is able to articulately and clearly present his position in a way that is understandable and powerful. "Refuting Compromise", by Jonathan Sarfati is a worthwhile read.

I have come across many books both pro and con on the issue of Creation, as well as several "semi-pro" efforts (Gap Theory, Framework Hypothesis). You probably have as well. The ones that are at either end often tend to cartoon the opposition as something not to be taken seriously.

Old Earth teachers (OE) insinuate, for instance, that Young Earth Creationists (YEC) have never heard of the idea of "Yom" (Hebrew for "day") being used in a variety of ways. Some also assume (wrongly) that the fossil record is an embarrassing evidence that YEC need to explain away. Not the case at all.
But Young Earth Creationists - which is what I am - often do similar things. They belittle the opposition or demonize the issue, assuring that more heat is generated than light; "Maybe your ancestors were monkeys....". And they often fight the Goliath of evolution and general Biblical disbelief in the armor of Saul (1st Samuel 17:38- 39) instead of the spiritual armor God has given us.

Examples: When confronted with cynicism concerning Joshua's commanding of the day to be extended they counter with Harry Rimmer's chestnut of scientists having discovered an extra day. Or, in order to discredit evolutionism, they pass on the now-discredited accounts of Darwin's final conversion and total repudiation of his life's work. For more on this subtopic, see my article: "Bad Science for a Good God".

That is why Dr. Sarfati's book is so welcome. He rolls up his sleeves (this is a difficult subject) and courteously and meticulously sets the groundwork for a Biblical account of six days of creation and day of rest. He does not belittle the opponents, whether they are strict evolutionists (Hawkins), day-age creationists (Hugh Ross, Gleason Archer), or Gap Theorists (R. Grigg) and Framework Hypothesists (Meredith Kline, J.A. Pipa). But he takes each position and deals with them scripturally, contextually and linguistically.
So much for now. So far I am only one fourth of the way through this book, but I was so impressed by it that I wanted to bring this to the attention of all those who do value this subject - which all Christians should. ( )

The main difference between Hugh Ross and young-earth creationists such as Answers in Genesis is our different authority. AiG believes that the 66 books of the Bible, because it is God's written Word, should be the basis for our thinking in every area on which it touches, including science.
