This fast-paced, inspirational, easy-to-read narrative reveals how God used one man of great courage, discipline, and humility to bring countless souls to Christ. God's accomplishments through George Whitefield are to this day virtually unparalleled. In an era when many ministers were timid and apologetic in their preaching, he preached the gospel with aggressive zeal and undaunted courage. In the wake of his fearless preaching, revival swept across the British Isles, and the Great Awakening transformed the American colonies. The previous two-volume work George Whitefield: The Life and Times of the Great Evangelist of the Eighteenth-Century Revival is now condensed into this single volume filled with primary-source quotations from the eighteenth century, not only from Whitefield but also from such prominent figures as John and Charles Wesley, Benjamin Franklin, and William Cowper.… (mer)

From this book I gained a great deal of knowledge about Whitefield & the time in which he lived, the major church issues & issues that faced him. For that, I am grateful & appreciative of the work done in bringing us this book. Clearly, Whitefield was a great man who was used of God in England and America. I will be reading the second half to go further into his life, this book gets us to about a year after he has established his orphan house in Georgia. The author clearly knows Whitefield very well & admires him deeply.

However, this becomes the book's greatest weakness. The author is basically on a mission to vindicate Whitefield because (apparently, I wasn't really aware) he has a bad reputation, especially in relation to John Wesley. Almost any flaw in Whitefield is chalked up to youth or something else. Every other writer critical of Whitefield is seen to be biased, and for any time period in Whitefield's life that we don't have information for the author (at least he's open about this) fantasizes about how nobly Whitefield must have been spending his time (as a boy, as a man during time's that we have no record). These things cripple the book for me, it's really too fawning. However, it is worth the read because of the great amount of research & information collected - you will truly learn much about a clearly great man. Unfortunately, you won't learn much about how he was a also a sinner like the rest of us. ( )
