If you enjoy black humour, you will really enjoy this story. It is about a neighbourhood rehabilitation project in Harlem, NY that employs three ex- convicts to assist in the renovation of slums. The three ex cons and other characters are vividly described in a very well to.d story about the charitable works but questionable methods of renovating blocks of slums in order to sell to wealthy New Yorkers. The whole purpose is to restore the neighbourhood to its former sophistication. It is very funny at times if you can appreciate the irony of the situations and the extravagant characters ( ) Hunting in Harlem is one of the funnier books I've read in a while. At the same time, it manages to be a thriller, as well as a political novel. That it can exist as all three of these things at once and still be intelligible as a whole is a testament to Mat Johnson's talent. He can wring humor, tragedy, and anger out of the subject of gentrification, creating a novel that is entertaining as well as thought-provoking. Not only are the main characters well-drawn and fully human, but also the villains, who seem at first to be of the outsized Dickensian variety, are rounded out and given inner lives as the novel progresses. No one is as one dimensional as they seem at first, and no one ends up where you would expect. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Horizon Realty is bringing Harlem back to its Renaissance. With the help of Cedric, Bobby, and Horus-three ex-cons trying to forge a new life-Horizon clears out the rubble and the rabble, filling once-dilapidated brownstones with black professionals handpicked for their shared vision of Harlem as a shining icon for the race. And fate seems to be working in Horizon's favor: Harlem's undesirable tenants seem increasingly clumsy of late, meeting early deaths by accident. As an ambitious reporter, Piper Goines, begins to investigate the neighborhood's extraordinarily high accident rate, Horizon's three employees find themselves fighting for their souls and their very lives-against a backdrop of some of the most beautiful brownstones in all of Manhattan.
