Two days in a row, and we’re done two JKR books - whoops - so much for seeing less of her! Quidditch Through the Ages gives me a lot less hesitation, though, since all of her royalties go towards supporting two very worthwhile charities. I wasn’t a huge fan of the original version of this book when it first came out, because it was a simple little book, that, while interesting in its history of the most popular wizarding sport, didn’t have a lot else to offer. Now fully illustrated by Emily Gravett the book is a far more enjoyable read! Gravett has styled the book like a museum exhibition catalogue, with artwork that mimics various historical styles, reproduces “artifacts”, and includes some lovely modernized line and woodcut style drawings to tie the whole narrative together. While those of us who aren’t mad know that the materials in the book are totally fictitious, Gravett’s art styles blend so well together and the artifacts are so realistic that we can suspend disbelief. With a handful of photographs the fantasy would be totally complete! ( )

Glad to have checked this one off, finally! And I love that I managed to finish it right before starting The Goblet of Fire, with The Quidditch World Cup opening.

I set a goal this year to read all the HP universe books without taking too long of a break in between...as a "getting the full experience" kind of thing.

I admit that I did end up taking a short hiatus when some unexpected life craziness came up, so I picked up this as a quick book to poke in and out of when I had free time.

It worked perfectly for that- mostly because I found it difficult to read more than a few pages at a time. This really is meant to be a nonfiction book taken from the wizarding world, so I wasn't put off by it being a little dry.

There was quite a bit of clever humor interjected into the pages, which helped to lighten it up, and I enjoyed learning about the origins of the sport and everything else in between. I feel like I walked away from this read with a much better understanding of Quidditch and its fanfare in general. Even though I found myself painfully bored at times. ( )

A fun, fast read that gives you a taste for Quidditch. I couldn't shake the feeling, however, that this book was created more with speed than precision. I thought that most of the chapters were ripe for expansions and that you could dive much more fully into the world Rowling has built throughout the Harry Potter series. I think she could take a cue from Marie Brennan's Lady Trent dragon memoirs. ( )

With thanks to J.K. Rowling for creating this book and so generously giving all her royalties to Comic Relief.
