the first 4 chapters are great! i loved how much she emphasizes how our earliest family experiences shape how we love for the rest of our lives, and that love cannot coexist with any form of abuse.

after that, she starts to talk about spirituality, and becomes super repetitive about how important love is to solve extremely complex issues in our world - if everyone just loved, our world would know peace! well, duh .. i’m the type of person who rolls her eyes when anyone suggests a “love” approach to solve the world’s problems, and because of that I couldn’t finish this book and put it down after the 6th chapter. based on other reviews, it doesn’t seem to get better after that. first 4 chapters were amazing though and super insightful. i love and value bell’s other work, which is why her preachy tone, judgment calls, and straight-up Wrong Opinions (referring to monica lewinsky as “worse” than bill clinton because she supposedly painted herself as a victim, for instance) were really surprising in this book. there were also aspects that reeked of privilege and grandiosity (she recommends having two homes to get work done; she goes on a random tirade about a colleague’s critique of her work) that took me out of the experience over and over. i gave this two stars for a few passages that contained her trademark depth of insight, and for writing on such a complex topic in general.

I think I was pretty much the only person in our book club who didn't care much for this, which makes me think I'm just the wrong audience. I don't care for self help literature much, and I was hoping for something a bit more political. Some of her statements, especially around greed, rang really false, though of course I can't speak to her interpretation of her own experience and I realize she was looking at this through a relationship lens rather than a socioeconomic one. But the places where she separated out greed from poverty really tossed me out of the mix.

I did like the chapter on loss and grieving, where she talked about how mourning long and hard is an appropriate reflection of the love you felt for someone. I absolutely believe that, but it's always good to hear the sentiment from someone else. She had some interesting stuff to say about love and power, also, but again—wrong book for me just now. I just wasn't in the mood. ( )

This book has good, true sentences. It also has weird stretches. It reads like a time capsule into late 70s/early 80s feminism, so I was surprised at the 1999 release date. I liked it for the respectful discussion of agency and how both men and women suffer from oppressive structures and structural terribleness. At the same time there were things that I didn't agree with, and I did some heavy skipping around the Jesus parts (I'm not a Jesus person). ( )
