For over twenty years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity. But now, a new investigation has been launched, bringing four strangers to Belasco House in search of the ultimate secrets of life and death. A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. For one night, they will investigate the Belasco House and learn exactly why the townfolks refer to it as the Hell House. Hell House, which inspired the 1973 film The Legend of Hell House, is Matheson's most frightening and shocking book, and an acknowledged classic of the genre.… (mer)

In many ways an unsubtle ghost story, violent, sordid and cliche BUT still good. Ending is a little weak, some of it didn't entirely make sense. Overall though the story is certainly compelling. ( )

What an absolute disaster of a read.
It starts off well enough, and with a fairly decent premise.
It slowly gets overtaken by rampant bigotry, and sexual violence.
It is all so unnecessary, and honestly, unintelligent.
The ending was then subpar.
What a waste of time. ( )

I'm really torn on this one. Because, here's the thing, if this had just been sleazy horror like Bentley Little or any of the movies made by Full Moon Entertainment, I could shrug and go, sure, you do you, gross sexual horror. Live it up. But this is Richard Matheson. He wrote I Am Legend, one of the best vampire novels ever written, and in this book he wasn't just trying to write splatterporn, he wanted to explore issues of faith and science and how ego makes fanatics out of people. Except he kept interrupting himself to do something so gross to his female characters that my eyes were kept in a constant of state of rolling because I couldn't believe he wanted me to take this shit seriously. One of the women gets fondled by a disembodied hand, people, and called a lesbian bitch when she protests. And that's pretty low-key compared to what happens to Florence, whose giant boobs are practically the fifth member of their group for all the number of times they were mentioned. Re-Animator would have been like, tone it down, buddy, and that had a disembodied head give oral to its main female character. And that had, what's the word I want? A fucking sense of humor. And camp. Pick a tone and stick with it, Matheson. ( )

Where to start with this book? Did I enjoy it? Hmm, I don't know. My feels are very mixed. There were certain parts I liked and then I'm mostly just feeling Bored

The concept of the book appealed to me because I LOVE haunted house novels and the idea of an Ultra Evil House called Hellhouse? Sign me up! Love that idea!

However, it failed in interesting me for nearly the entire 2nd half of the book. The characters were somewhat interesting enough and the plot of them coming to this Ultra Evil House to cleanse it of its evil that has inhabited it for decades - Great! Love it! Buuuuuut...it failed to Wow me with the progression of plot and writing in general. It felt at times that the plot was moving so slow as if to just drag out the length of the book. It took forever to get to the endgame of the novel when it easily could have been achieved like a hundred pages before.

Its not to say that book was entirely bad it was just not what I had hoped. I wanted more scares, more ghosts, just more in general! The gang of characters were fun, and each had some interesting points. However, I was disappointed that the one character of the group I liked the most was one that ended up dying and in a way that felt cheap.

All in all, not what I hoped and not something I'd ever pick up again or recommend to others. I'm just thankful that it wasn't too long in page length so I didn't feel like I wasted too much time with it. ( )

I just can't get enough of these big old haunted gothic houses. A lovely tale for everyone who enjoys the haunted house genre. ( )

I haven't got a clue how to rate this book. There are too many things I found either funny or plain bad. I even waited for a day or so to think about it. On the one hand, I like haunted house theme (half a star for the theme). On the other, there are tons of things which I really didn't like. First, it isn't scary. At all. Sure, there are a few moments that should have been scary, but for me they were plain flat - as if I was watching from above.
Second, I didn't like the characters or how they were presented. Barret, the self appointed unofficial leader of the group of people who were hired to spend a few days in that house, is the worst with his constant patronizing chuckle and calmness.
Simply put: I didn't like this story. The ending is hilarious. I think this story might probably be better as a film. I really thought I'd like this book more.
