Finally got to read this book -- beautifully written, focusing on a family of Mexican women and how they struggle against stereotypes, traditions, and each other while using the tradition of cooking to define themselves. Mama Elena definitely emerged as one of the all-time horrible mothers I've encountered in fiction. But Tita and her love for Pedro withstood even her mother's interference. The recipes sound nice but very labor-intensive, so I would have to find easier versions of the delicious sounding food to prepare in my own home. I positively recommend this wonderful classic. I enjoyed the act that recipes were included throughout the book and it helped my understand the importance of food in the culture, but overall, I did not feel connected to the characters and did not feel compelled to continue reading.
