Finally got to read this book -- beautifully written, focusing on a family of Mexican women and how they struggle against stereotypes, traditions, and each other while using the tradition of cooking to define themselves. The recipes are interesting as well, though I am not sure I am willing to try making them. ( ![]() Tita y Pedro se aman. Filled with magical realism, the novel is framed around monthly recipes and stories. This book was my introduction to magical realism and uses surrealism and cooking to tell the story of a Mexican family. I enjoyed the act that recipes were included throughout the book and it helped my understand the importance of food in the culture, but overall, I did not feel connected to the characters and did not feel compelled to continue reading. I felt conflicted about this book, but at the end of the day, I liked it. It reads like a fairy tale with the fantasy elements woven in with homespun remedies. I didn't really have any investment in the main character's romance (actually I anti-shipped it), but I was interested in her other relationships: with her niece, sisters, mother, etc.. I also agree with other commenters that the adventures of her sister Gertrudis would have made a more interesting story. I think the framing device (that this is a family legend being passed down) does a good job of integrating the magical realism and recipe aspects of the book.
