There was a time in drag racing when creativity ran rampant, and innovation was the name of the game. Every class had its own rules, every car had its own look, every team had its own agenda, and every driver had his own style. From the 1960s through the 1970s, the sport grew and changed dramatically, and it all happened in front of Bob McClurg's camera. McClurg is an accomplished magazine writer and photographer, but he's best known for his drag racing images of the 1960s and 1970s. His lens captured all of the action of the Roadsters, Gassers, Altereds, Top Fuel, Funny Cars, Pro Stocks, and even the modern age of nostalgia drag racing. Follow each of the classes as they evolve, each year bringing more speed and lower elapsed times. Follow the exciting careers of 'Big Daddy' Don Garlits, Don 'Snake' Prudhomme, 'TV Tommy' Ivo, 'Big John' Mazmanian, and many more. Now available in paperback for the first time, McClurg's best drag racing photos are brought together in one volume, a book that is a necessary addition to any drag racing fans library. With a foreword by John Force and more than 350 color and black-and-white photos, this book is an exciting visual history of the sport's most exciting years: the Golden Age of drag racing.… (mer)

I received this book and determined it to be a top read for any person who has been involved (or married to one) in drag racing. It was a great history and accurate to be best of my knowledge. Would highly recommend it. ( )

One of two CarTech titles I received from the Library Thing's Early Reviewers program. As a fan of funny car racing, it was a treat to read about the days of old. From the numerous photos to the foreword by John Force, it is very well organized and informative. Recommended for any racing fan. ( )

Fun book! Great photos and lots of information! Though I was raised as a classic car girl, I did enjoy the great pictures and the information on all the different drag racing cars. I got the soft cover but if you're a collector you might want to get the hardcover so it won't get as thrashed from everyone looking at it! ( )

Fantastic pictures and intimate stories make this history of racing come alive. McClurg's discretion in keeping his stories at no more than PG rating will be greatly appreciated by racing's youngest fans. If you have no interest in cars or racing, this book most likely won't change your mind, but it's a great choice for those readers with even a passing interest to discover the rich history of the sport. My son is a fan of anything with an engine so when I saw a copy of Diggers, Funnies, Gassers and Altereds was available I wanted it immediately. How lucky I was to get a copy.

Full of color photos and history that just can't be gathered easily on the internet, Bob McClury's book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of drag racing.

There is something really amazing about how these guys put these cars together, raced them and lived to tell about it. For folks who have only see drag racing on Happy Days or in the movie Grease, this book will open your eyes to the art and science behind not only the cars but the keys to the souls of the racers themselves.

Wonderful book and the research is top notch. ( )
