Libraries must provide better access to their collections for all users, including Spanish-language materials. The American Library Association has recognized this increasing need. Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries: Bilingual Fourth Edition is the only resource available that provides both authorized and reference entries in English and Spanish. A first-check source for the most frequently used headings needed in school and public libraries, this book incorporates thousands of new and revised entries to assist in applying LCSH and CSH headings. Of the approximately 30,000 headings listed, most include cross-references, and all of the cross-reference terms are translated. MARC21 tags are included for all authorized entries to simplify entering them into computerized catalogs, while indexes to all headings and free-floating subdivisions are provided in translation from Spanish to English. This book gives librarians access to accurate translations of the subject terms printed in books published and cataloged in English-speaking countries--invaluable information in settings with Spanish-speaking patrons.… (mer)

Would you like to have Spanish Language subject headings in your library catalog? If so, Joanna Fountain is a super cataloger and this fourth edition of here sub cataloger and this volume is very useable in both school and public libraries. To use the volume, Fountain has a very clear introduction with various charts and tables that demonstrate patters. Then, you look up the English subject heading and you will find the equivalent Spanish heading. So, you can use the volume for both English and Spanish headings. The whole is based on the Library of Congress headings so they are compatible with most of the commercial jobber’s supplied headings. Highly recommended particularly for those district level cataloging services that are supplying processed books to libraries.

This is a large tome and while it is bilingual, it is bilingual for Spanish and English. This type of tool would be manna for a cataloger, but few others. However, it does show how the language of the catalog needs to be considered in other languages. Trouble is that the "Spanish" used won't work with certain "Spanish-speaking" populations, especially some ELL students. Of most interest is the information that the MARC tags give to a professional. Bottom line: This is a ready reference for only certain professionals. Not recommended.

Subject Headings for School and Public Libraries is a quick reference and invaluable companion for the busy public school libarian. Instead of taking the time to look up each possible subject heading on the authorities, one can quickly flip to the heading in this book and read the helpful notes as well. Dr. Fountain also includes notes on which subfields to use. Very handy! ( )
