In this book, A Day With Daddy, it talks about a special, fun filled day at the park, a child does with their dad. The boy in the story lives with his mother and he gets so excited when he knows his father will be picking him up and although he has to say goodbye at the end of the day, he is only a little say because he knows he enjoyed the day with his dad very much and that he will be back again.

This is a story about a little boy who is excited about his Saturday with his dad, and the story follows the events of the day, from the child waking and awaiting his dad's arrival, to returning back to his mom that night. The story is written with simple language structure so that most 1st grade students will be able to read it. The voice sounds realistically like it could be a 7-year-old's thoughts on paper, as well.

Great illustrations- very lifelike. Grimes' writing captures a child's excitement about a special day with his dad, but the illustrator captures the dad's feelings really well, too, I thought. There's one particular scene where the dad and the son are at the park and the son is briefly playing with another little kid-- something about the dad's stance in the picture-- hands in pockets, looking on and paying attention, but not entirely engaged in the conversation happening between the kids, as if he's a little bit of an outsider in that moment- seems to really capture a father allowing his son a to set the pace for exploring independence.

The book-- story and illustrations-- give a face and words for something a lot of kids feel. I think it's an important book to have in a classroom (or in a home library). Grimes portrays the family relationship blatantly, unapologetically, but she also doesn't try to force any particularly positive position either. It just is: the boy lives with his mom, but Saturdays are for dad. I find that refreshing. ( )
