This book provides an immense amount of information about trees. I would use this book in a guided reading group, but definitely break it into chunks and have students focus on only 2-3 chapters. Although each chapter is only 2 pages long, each page contains a lot of words. I thought the pictures were great; there was a perfect balance of illustrations and photographs. Every picture either has a descriptive caption or labels, which is beneficial for all students unfamiliar with certain words or objects. There are plenty of descriptive attributes, characteristic events, and opportunities for students to explore sequencing events (life cycle of a tree, germination, and how apples grow from a seed). This book describes in detail different trees, where they grow, and what they need to survive. It is full of colorful illustrations and real world photographs to help students make connections. This book would be a perfect opener for a lesson on seed germination. The children could have the book read to them with a focus on the important vocabulary words and then germinate a seed in the classroom in a damp paper towel. I think children will be particularly interested in how animals eat seeds, poop then out, and then the seed grows into a new tree. ( )

Although this book did not have a distinct story line, I still found it interesting and I think young children would be able to learn a lot from it especially since it is a factual book about trees and how they grow. A nonfiction book may not be a kid’s top choice but the colorful visuals would definitely draw the reader in. Since trees are something they see everyday, it might be interesting for them to learn about how a tree grows and that is a story in itself. Also, kids would understand how to describe things due to the numerous amounts of descriptive attributes and characteristic events in the story.

Great book that explains the different parts of a tree. It also talks about pollination, making seeds, and how people can help trees!. In the back of the book you can also find a glossary and index. ( )

This non-fiction children’s book is filled with tree facts and a glossary to clearly define vocabulary utilized in the text. It outlines the cycle of life for a tree and is crammed full of pictures and diagrams. This book also touches on environmental issues and outlines how trees affect humans and how humans can help trees. Page thirty-one outlines some “unique facts” that will really capture kid’s attention.
