Mit ‘Hardball’ will der Autor Chris Matthews dem Leser vermitteln wie Politik im Tagesgeschäft gemacht wird. Er greift dabei auf einen reichlichen Anekdotenschatz zurück, den er während seiner Tätigkeit als Mitarbeiter amerikanischer Abgeordneter, Redenschreiber von Jimmy Carter und Senior Aide von Tip O’Neill ansammeln konnte. Matthews interessiert besonders das Verhalten der Politiker. Aus den von ihm geschickt gewählten Anekdoten leitet Matthews die für ihn grundlegenden Verhaltensregeln für Politiker ab:

1. Es geht nicht darum wen man kennt; Es geht darum wen man kennen lernen kann.
2. Politik findet auf der lokalen Ebene statt.
3. Es ist besser zu Erhalten als zu Geben.
4. Bleib loyal.
5. Behalte Deine Feinde vor Dir.
6. Werde nicht wütend; Versuche nicht gleichzuziehen; Gewinne stattdessen an Vorsprung.

8. Sprich nur wenn es der Stille zuträglich ist.
9. Stimme immer im Prinzip zu.
10. Mache auf Deine Probleme aufmerksam.

Das Buch ist kurzweilig und der Leser sieht das Verhalten von Politikern im persönlichen Umfeld mit wacheren Augen. ( )

I'd seen Chris Matthews' show Hardball and was really looking forward to reading his book. The title alone got me interested. The inner workings of Washington. Maybe now I'll understand why things are the way they are.

I read almost half of the book and came away with only two basic premises that were repeated and exampled ad nauseum.

1. Get to know everyone you can. They could help you in the future.

2. Be nice to your enemies. They could help you in the future.
This would have been a good book if Matthews made a point and backed it up with a pertinent story or two. Unfortunately, it was a story or ten. I found myself reading the first paragraph or two of a topic, then skipping to the next subject. Ok, Chris, I get your point. We've beaten the horse. Let's move on.

Maybe it was his writing style that couldn't hold my interest. Who knows. After a while I got tired of it all. ( )
