Each story is prefaced with a historical footnote on the particular magazine which first ran it, giving insight into the history and politics at the time as well as some character profiles about the authors, which really set the mood for the following stories. Half way through the book there is also a bonus 10 page llustrated Section dedicated to the pulp artists.

My copy of this book is falling apart just like an old pulp magazine might be. I almost think it was engineered that way. A great collection of old stories from the pages of Weird Tales, All-Story Magazine, Amazing Stories, Detective Magazine and others. They certainly don't write stuff like this anymore. Very short stories by Upton Sinclair, Max Brand, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Sinclair Lewis, Dashiell Hammett, Hugo Gernsback, Ray Bradbury and many others famous and a few forgotten. Hard to pick a favorite story but I give the nod to "The Resurrection of Jimber-Jaw" by ER Burroughs. A fun book. ( )
