Brother Cadfael must intervene when a prisoner exchange is interrupted by love and murder, in the Silver Dagger Award-winning medieval mystery series. In February of 1141, men march home from war to Shrewsbury, but the captured sheriff Gilbert Prestcote is not among them. Febrero del año 1141. Continúa la guerra civil. En la batalla de Lincoln, es hecho prisionero, junto al rey Esteban, el gobernador de Shropshire, jefe directo de Hugo Berengario. Se decide un intercambio: el gobernador por un señor galés, capturado durante un ataque a un convento de monjas. Pero, antes del intercambio, uno de los dos prisioneros muere. Fray Cadfael no tarda en entrar en sospechas de que no se trata de una muerte del todo natural. Por supuesto, sobre él recae la obligación de demostrarlo y encontrar al asesino.

After a battle up north ends in King Stephen's imprisonment & the disappearance of the town's Sheriff, rumors fly that the Sheriff is still alive but the abbey has no bargaining chip until a foolish noble gets caught attempting to break into a nunnery. The Welsh family agrees to the exchange except that the Sheriff ends up dead in the Abbey's infirmary after the exchange. Cadfael knows there are more than 2 suspects & only one of them carried out the crime. Will Cadfael get to the killer before the bandits return to wipe out the nunnery? (

History raids and battles play the largest part of any Cadfael mystery in the series up to this point.
In a series pretty well known for

happy endings and romances blossoming, this book was a surprise in that the murderer not only gets away but he also gets the girl. Eliud kills the sheriff so that his cousin, the hero of the story Elis can marry the sheriff’s daughter Melicent. That leaves the way open for Eliud to marry Elis’ betrothed Cristina. In the end the murderer Eliud is snuck back to Wales to marry. Hugh and Cadfael aren’t to bothered by the outcome, so I guess I’m not either.

Sheriff Prescote is wounded and a prisoner of the Empress Maud's forces. An exchange is being arranged and he is brought back to the Abbey at Shrewsbury where Brothers Edmund and Cadfael can care for him. However he has made enemies and is murdered in the infirmary. So what happens to the young man to be exchanged! And who murdered the sheriff, who as a dead man cannot be ransomed.

In this book, we see medieval Wales under Owain Gwynedd (the grandfather of Llewelyn, "the one, true and only Prince of Wales," as well as the continuing feud between King Stephen and the Empress. A book well worth reading! (
