I have read this book a couple of times - this time I listened to it on CD. Robert Jordan does an excellent job of detailing characters and also developing a wide ranging history and bringing those characters into it.

The two readers (Kate Reading and Michael Karmer) are excellent - Michael does the bulk of the reading, with Kate doing the reading when the perspective is a female character. Both of them do a great job of making each character unique with voice inflections and accents. ( )

Book: 3 stars
Well, that was... long.
I'm not sure how to feel about this book. I loved it as a teenager, but now I mostly find the characters annoying. The plot is interesting though, and I know that at least some of the characters become less annoying in later books, and more awesome characters are yet to come, so I will definitely continue with the series. First time I gave up around book #9 because there were no more books translated to Serbian and I couldn't do the shift to English easily, but I still after all these years want to find out what happens at the end.

Audio: 4 stars
The narrators are awesome. I was a bit annoyed by the male narrator at the beginning though, he had a strange tilt in the middle of his sentences that took me a while to get used to.

Also: All this time I've been pronouncing the names of people and places wrong. The translation to Serbian is mostly to blame because they did a rotten job of it, but now I feel like I'm reading a different book. It took me a while to get used to the correct pronunciation of names, character names especially. ( )

Finally, finished after several months of reading and one short hiatus. It was good for what it was, but it pays to go into this one knowing that it's pure vanilla fantasy and pretty much the same story as The Lord of the Rings. In fact you could probably sit down and match the the two books chapter for chapter if you really wanted. Not a bad thing in my case since I was looking for just that kind of easy-going fantasy at the time so it suited me perfectly. I'll not dive straight into book no. 2 since I've other novels in mind to read first but I'll certainly continue with the series at some point.

Very good, so long as you know what you're getting and don't expect any more than that. ( )

This is the first book in what turns out to be a 14 volume epic- I'm told that the author didn't even survive to finish it, and had it completed by others from his notes.
The Eye of the World follows the story of Rand Al-Thor and his companions from the town of Emond's Field, led on an epic journey from the western hinterlands of this world toward the center of the kingdom, and then to the place of the title, in the northern reaches of the world, where they must save the world from Ba'alzamon, a devil-like figure who is close to escaping the prison constructed for him thousands of years ago. The characters are pretty good- the band of travelers is led by a sorceress named Moiraine, from a community of wiches called the Aes Sadae (I think of the Bene Geserit from Dune- same idea). Moiraine is accompanied by Lan, a "warder", fighter and sort-of bodyguard to Moiraine. The group also includes Rand's friends Mat and Perrin, all 16 year old boys, and Egwene, an aspiring Aes Sadae herself, and Nynaeve, "The Wisdom", the local healer from their village, who is set up as the sceptic throughout the journey.

There is of course a Prophecy, because there's always a Prophecy in this type of literature. I get tired of this trope, but I have to admit it always works.

An important part of this world is that women can be taught to safely wield magic, the "one power", but when men arise who can do so they are much more dangerous and must be contained. We are led to suspect from early on that Rand might be such a man, leading to Ba'alzamon searching for him hungrily.

The entire book is one long journey, with other characters joining and leaving during it. It is chock full of references to past events and places that have not been explained fully, with dozens of historical figures whose actions we can only guess at. I know this is intentional, a way of building the world with a rich history, even if we don't know it, but it's laid on a little thick for my tastes. I assume much will be explained in subsequent books- the map in the front names many places that don't even get mentioned in this volume.

Reading other reviews here, I see one complaint that the book is too derivative of Tolkien, and I think that's fair. The heroes are chased by Trollocs (just like orcs, basically- waves of expendable soldiers of the evil one); Moiraine is essentially a Gandalf figure, and Lan is reminiscent of Tolkien's hero fighters. Women play a much more important role in Jordan's book, though, a notable improvement on Tolkien.

The Eye of the World itself is a little disappointing when it comes, and I didn't really understand its point in the narrative (won't say more to avoid any spoilers).

The adventure is good, though, and I'll stay for book 2. The whole series is quite a commitment, though. ( )

A better way of hearing the story. This is in some ways quite a bit easier than the book itself. The narration was good and I feel it was well read. It took me awhile to get into the characters in the fact that I had read the book beforehand will be at sometime ago was of some benefit. Highly recommended and will look forward to the next book in the sequence. ( )

And the shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was as blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

(from Aleth nin Taerin alta Camora,
The Breaking of the World.

Author unknown, the Fourth Age)
And it came to pass in those days, as it had come before and would come again, that the Dark lay heavy on the land and weighed down the hearts of men, and the green things failed, and hope died. And men cried out to the Creator, saying, O Light of the Heavens, Light of the World, let the Promised One be born of the mountain, according to the prophecies, as he was in ages past and will be in ages to come. Let the Prince of the Morning sing to the land that green things will grow and the valleys give forth lambs. Let the arm of the Lord of the Dawn shelter us from the Dark, and the great sword of justice defend us. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.

The Cycle of the Dragon.

The palace still shook occasionally as the earth rumbled in memory, groaned as if it would deny what had happened. (Prologue)
The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. In one Age, called the Third Age by some, an Age yet to come, an Age long past, a wind rose in the Mountains of the Mist. The wind was not the beginning. There are neither beginning nor endings to turning of the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning. (Chapter One)
