A Translator's Testimony. J.B. Phillips says- "I have felt compelled to write this book. IT is my testimony to the historicity and reliability of the New Testament. "Few people have had such a close and constant contact with the New Testament as I have had. Even fewer have taken the trouble to understand the business of 'communication.' I say this in no spirit of conceit; it is a matter of simple fact. I therefore felt that it was high time that someone, who has spent the best years of his life in studying both the New Testament and good modern communicative English, spoke out. I do not care a rap what the 'avant-garde' scholars say; I do very much care what God says and does." from the Forward, RING OF TRUTH… (mer)

JB Philliops translated the New Testament into modern English. Whilst he did so it really deepened his faith at a time when contemporary scholars were really uindermining people's faith. Good read ( )

A book by the scholar and pastor JB Phillips on his time spent translating the NT from the original greek. He makes the point that the words in the NT have "a ring of truth" to them and it is clear that they are unequivocally true. The raw and gritty words of the NT make it clear that it is not something that could have been made up. It is a somewhat unorganized collection of his thoughts, both before, during, and after working on the translation.

I recommend this book for all people and level of walks in Christ. Phillips has a great way of putting the difficult words of apologetics and textual criticism into language we all can understand. ( )

Yes, well, Animal Farm also has the "ring of truth" to it. So?

I don't read "christian" books, but had cause to believe Phillips might be worthwhile. He is capable of being very real, stays away from "theology", and allows room for thinking for yourself about certain things by not being explicit about them.

But, having just finished reading Genesis, I'm left wondering why I would choose to read the Bible over reading Animal Farm. ( )
