This was written after the first Mind and Life gathering, when a group of western scientists from various fields met with Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama. It's a few years old but holds up very well — the scientists had at least a passing interest in Buddhism, and the Dalai Lama has always had a scientific and engineering bent. Both sets of parties attempt inroads on constructive comparison and educational crossovers. Many of the scientists also have an interest in the history and philosophy of science (this is far from typical), and they are not blindly devoted to contemporary models. Although Varela's work in systems biology and cognitive science was never quite mainstream, his ideas have become increasingly influential since his death, sending ripples into several different scientific and philosophical disciplines. There are useful talks here, though the sound quality is only poor to fair. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
What is the essence of the mind? Could computers ever have consciousness? Can compassion be learned? When does consciousness enter the human embryo? These are just some of the many questions that were discussed during a historic meeting that took place between several prominent Western scientists and the Dalai Lama. Gentle Bridges is a chronicle of this extraordinary exchange of ideas. Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
