Todos los días se extinguen especies animales y vegetales, todos los días hay profesiones que se tornan inútiles, idiomas que dejan de tener personas que los hablen, tradiciones que pierden sentido, sentimientos que se convierten en sus contrarios.Una familia de alfareros comprende que ha dejado de serle necesaria al mundo. Como una serpiente que muda de piel para poder crecer en otra que más adelante también se volverá pequeña, el centro comercial parece decirle a la alfarería: «Muere, ya no necesito de ti».Como es habitual en el conjunto de su obra, en esta novela Saramago plasma su visión del mundo de hoy y de la sociedad humana tal como la vivimos. Y nos recuerda que no cambiaremos de vida si no cambiamos la vida.

Protagonist Cipriano Algor, an artisan living in the country with his daughter and son-in-law, sells his handmade tableware to the Center. The Center’s agent tells Cipriano his services are no longer required, so he attempts to find another way to make money from his skill as a potter. It is a story of everyday life involving a family, a stray dog, a budding relationship, and how these people deal with change.

This book requires patience, as the meaning of The Cave is not apparent until the end. It is not for anyone looking for plot-driven action. As is typical of Saramago, it is written in stream-of-consciousness without quotation marks or separation of dialogue, so the reader has to keep track mentally. He strings together a series of words to convey many shades of meaning.

It is a story of human (and animal) connections in uncertain times, how people can deceive themselves, and how we maintain our illusions rather than confronting the truth. It is a social commentary on the increasing artificiality of our world. I think it is particularly pertinent to our present time.

I embark annually on a project to read five works from a notable author. This year I picked Portuguese author José Saramago, recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. This is the fifth of five for the year. I just loved it and am adding it to my list of favorites.

Todos los días se extinguen especies animales y vegetales, todos los días hay profesiones que se tornan inútiles, idiomas que dejan de tener personas que los hablen, tradiciones que pierden sentido, sentimientos que se convierten en sus contrarios.

Come in tutti i suoi romanzi Saramago coniuga cultura e irriverenza per raccontare la società e l’uomo. E così la storia di un vasaio, Cipriano Algor, diventa l’occasione per fornire una rappresentazione della società del consumo, con le sue regole in cui il profitto prevale su tutto. Il cliente di Cipriano Algor è il Centro, un ente indefinito che detta, al proprio interno, le regole dei condomini ma che ha la forza di condizionare anche la vita di chi vive al di fuori del Centro. E, infatti, la tranquilla esistenza dell’artigiano e della sua famiglia, vivono al di fuori dell’ultima cintura, viene stravolta quando il Centro dichiara di non essere più interessata ad acquistare i vasi, in quanto non c’è più domanda. Inizia la contrapposizione tra il desiderio di Cipriano di non abbandonare la sua vita e di continuare a fare il proprio mestiere, di vivere con la figlia e con il suo cane, Trovato, e la tentazione di accettare la proposta del cognato di trasferirsi nel Centro. Alla fine, Cipriano si arrende, ma una volta arrivato al Centro comprende che lo stesso è un luogo di privazione di ogni libertà in cui le abitudini vengono imposte dall’alto. Non c’è un dittatore da abbattere, un nemico da combattere, perché il Centro è del tutto impersonale, è un ente burocratico. E alla fine del romanzo l’artigiano e la figlia si avvicinano ad una caverna dove ci sono sei persone incatenate che raffigurano metaforicamente le statuine che lui ha prodotto in luogo dei vasi. Sono ciechi, sono senza vita, la caverna è quella di Platone, quella in cui gli uomini non riescono ad andare oltre alle illusioni delle proprie ombre. E il libro si conclude con un manifesto in cui il Centro comunica che a breve saranno in vendita i biglietti per accedere alla caverna di Platone. È un libro in cui la consueta intensità della scrittura e della narrazione di Saramago lascia il segno, ma la storia appassiona e la lettura procede senza sforzi eccessivi. E davvero non mancano gli spunti di riflessione. ( )
