This book is a guide to all of the monsters found in The Silver Dragon series by the same publisher. The introduction states that the book is meant to be his Apprentice’s final course in becoming a wizard. The book is set up as an encyclopedia-esque journal of evil monsters that exist in their world and the student must be prepared to encounter. Each monster is given a page with a frightening illustration and stats that include: size, diet, abilities and a short paragraph describing them. The book is organized by type of monster such as flying, undead etc. In addition there are bits of diary entries that the master wrote while encountering some of the creatures in his own travels. At the end there is a quiz to test the Apprentice and any other readers’ knowledge of what they read. The illustrations are detailed and gruesome and there is a mix of common and unheard of monsters keeping the book interesting. Some children may be confused if they pick the book up without knowing it was a part of series. Others may be inspired to find the series and still others might just like the creepy monsters. Sure there's not much here, but as a kid's D&D-related book there's not much meant to be here in the first place. (And having just got back from shopping for children's books, I can honestly say that the price is about par for the course.)

Delightfully silly book for the young ones who are interested in fantasy monsters. ( )

A Practical Guide to Monsters seems like a fun young adult oriented book for refrencing maybe during role-playing games or what not.

The writing was fun but I got this book for the sketches and drawings, really enjoyed this especially since I found if for a dollar at the local Half-priced book shop. ( )
