After talking to some of the children at her school, they tell her that she is going to have to pay 1,000 $ in fines and go to jail. Worried, Beverly decides to put off returning the book and goes home upset. After her mom notices Beverly is sad, Beverly tells her mother everything. Her mom takes her to the library the next day and the librarian tells her not to worry but just to be more careful next time. I liked that a girl was reading about dinosaurs, and how this story showed her really exploring that subject outside of just reading (she makes a dinosaur habitat, for example). I also liked that the author explored children's fears of what would happen if a book was returned late, and that in the end, Beverly is given a bit of grace and told to be more careful next time.
The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the illustrations just aren't very attractive. In fact, my 7 year old niece said that the librarian character was going to give her nightmares because "she's ugly." Ha! Leave it to a kid to say exactly what she's thinking. ( )
