This volume is a part of the course of home reading entitled the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. The aim of this little book is to give general readers some idea of the subject and spirit of European Continental literature in the later and culminating period of the Middle Ages, the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. It contains chapters relative to French, Spanish, Scandinavian, German and Italian literature. No English is included because medieval English literature is easily accessible and because during that time the best medieval literature was developed, England was comparatively unproductive.… (mer)

This book is a nice sampler of a variety of medieval literature. It pulls selections from French, Spanish, Scandinavian, German and Italian literature. The samples themselves fall under the following categories: National Epic, Romances, Lyrics, Tales and Fables, Didactic and Allegorical Literature, and Drama. As an introductory to this type of literature I found the volume to be very good. I only wish there could of been more included, the volume only running 141 pages in all but it is enough to whet ones appetite to read further in the areas where one feels the greatest pull.
