This story presents a world that is both familiar and new to escape into and an adventurous heroine to follow as the story progresses. And, of course, a few trolls thrown in for good measure. Those interested in YA fantasy and fairy tale retellings would certainly enjoy this book. ( ![]() I enjoyed this book, though the narrative style is not a favorite of mine. Between the several narrators and the telling instead of showing, I had a hard time connecting to the characters as much as I wanted to. I also felt like the beginning of the book was a Middle Grade while the ending was more YA. However, I loved seeing how this retelling shows off some of the best aspects of my favorite fairy tale. This would be a good introduction to East of the Sun, West of the Moon for someone who doesn't know the original, though I still don't feel it has quite the charm of the original tale. It does give more depth to the characters, though I'm not sure that it needed to be as long a book as it is. I think it could have been shortened a bit and made a much tighter story. This is a retelling of the fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon, which if you aren't familiar with is basically Beauty and the Beast meets Cupid and Psyche. Admittedly, my rating is biased because this book is one I loved when I was younger and I didn't love the writing so much this time around or even the characters or their relationships, but I did feel nostalgic for all of it. It's probably more of a 3-star in quality, but my younger self really loved this so much that I can't give it less than a 4 for my adulthood re-read. What a lovely tale. I have read and heard stories that have similar elements, so I was always wondering/dreading how things would turn and end for the characters. But I loved how it unfolded and finally finished. Summary- This Book starts off with a girl named Rose, or Ebba-Rose, and the book goes from her point of view to her parents, brother and a mysterious white bear. After a not so brief introduction on her parents and their superstitions their family is hit with illness. And one of the families daughters is sick, on her deathbed. A great white bear comes and wishes to take rose with him in exchange of saving their daughter and giving the poor family wealth. Rose agrees, to the disagreement of her father, to go with the Great white bear, who takes her to a palace in the mountains. There she spends her days looming and eventually growing closer to the Great White bear. A mysterious man would come and visit her in the room at night, she wanted to know who he was. After taking a visit to her family her mother gives her a flint and steel that can always light. After going back to the palace she uses the flint and steel to see the man, which breaks a curse that a troll queen put on the man who was turned into the Bear. The bear is taken to a land far north and Rose adventures to find him. She eventually finds him after the help of strangers and her own determination. He was set to marry the Troll Queen, and Rose intervened, stopping the wedding and escaping with the great white bear. They then get married and live happily after. Opinion- I really liked this book! After getting it at a small bookstore I finally managed to read it. It took me around a day to get through it, I couldn't put it down! The folklore in here is very interesting and I found myself wanting to learn more. The characters were also very interesting and developed! All in all I would definitely recommend it! Though it is kind of lengthy, 400 pages, it is a good read. If there is a sequel I would love to read it! Go check it out if you haven't already! inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
