Mi aspettavo... di più. L'idea fin da subito mi era sembrata eccellente e intrigante, perfetta per creare il giusto mood, la giusta introspezione, per raccontarci una storia forte e commovente focalizzandoci sui sentimenti e le emozioni di chi rimane in vita, di chi si sente colpevole per una morte così ingiusta, crudele e senza senso. Un'occasione perfetta che è stata alle solite rovinata. La scelta della narrazione era inusuale e perfetta, la storia con la sua idea di base perfetta ma la resa lascia a desiderare. Mi sarei aspettata di empatizzare fin da subito con la protagonista, sentire il suo dolore e sofferenza invece niente... la vicenda va avanti a singhiozzo raccontandoci dettagli della vita della giovane di cui a nessuno può fregare qualcosa esempio il primo ciclo mestruale e i traumi a esso connessi che... con tutto l'affetto... cavolo ci frega?! Per metà libro ci si riduce ai discorsi tipici di una adolescente che si lamenta del mondo e della famiglia gettando di tanto in tanto al lettore qualche frase fatta e riflessione scontata e triste del tipo "il mondo è brutto e cattivo, la terapia è inutile, la mia sorellina è morta a nessuno frega niente, la vita è brutta e orribile e tutti siamo destinati a morire male come gli Stark!!" Ok... diciamo che le citazioni sono migliori e anche carine, che ti rimangono in testa esempio

"Credo che il motivo per cui gli adulti pensavo che una terapia regolare funzioni è perché, mentre la fanno, il tempo passa. Non stanno meglio perché ne parlano. Stanno meglio perché il tempo trascorre e loro imparano a vivere le loro vite perché devono farlo. Dobbiamo farlo"

Oppure

"La mamma, David e io ci sentivamo come incollati insieme finché non ci fu Em. Lei condivideva il sangue di tutti noi e ci rese una vera famiglia. Lei chiuse una specie di cerchio e quando arrivasti tu, ti ci ponesti proprio nel mezzo. Adesso è diverso. Adesso sembra che noi siamo semplicemente il cerchio senza niente in mezzo."

Belle citazioni ma nulla di più. Le leggi, te le segni e stop... non c'è un vero coinvolgimento emotivo, una riflessione profonda, sono belle citazioni messe lì a caso per riempire il vuoto e ricordarti che la ragazza è traumatizzata dal mondo e si sente in colpa e stop. Di fatto Zoe è quasi invisibile nel romanzo e viene citata solo per dare un minimo di senso e struttura alla storia e ricordarci il trauma di Tess ed è questo che rovina a mio avviso il libro. Come YA sarebbe anche carino, la ragazza con un trauma che incontra un bravo ragazzo, si innamora e grazie all'amore riesce a perdonare se stessa per quello che è successo alla sorellina. Peccato che il libro ti viene presentato come elaborazione del lutto, con al centro Zoe, con Zoe come protagonista, ti aspetti quindi dettagli su Zoe, sul suo passato, racconti di momenti speciali tra le sorelle, ti aspetti di conoscere ogni singolo dettaglio della sua vita invece a malapena a fine romanzo scopri come è morta ed è questo che mi ha demoralizzata... come YA funziona, la storia d'amore un po' tragica e strappalacrime funziona tutto il resto no... il fatto che per l'ennesima volta un buon libro sia stato presentato male illudendo il lettore è triste ed è il motivo per cui non merita 5 stelline... mi sento di consigliarlo solo a chi cerca uno YA un po' diverso rispetto al solito e a cui non importa troppo scoprire i mille retroscena su Zoe e sulla sua breve vita, in tal caso potrete emozionarvi e anche provare affetto per la coppietta in caso contrario girare al largo per evitare la cocente delusione. ( )

This book has all the feels. I giggled and i cried. Fantastic read. Best book i have read in a while. ( )

i really enjoyed listening to this book but:
1. it is sad;
2. it is even more sad when you grew up in pittsburgh and know all the places the author is talking about.

i listened to this on a cross-country flight and i was looking out the window and crying a lot of the time thinking about going to kennywood as a child and grocery shopping at the giant eagle.

anyways, i liked the narrator and the style of beard's writing. it's easy to listen to and a super-quick read.(like 5 or so hours on audiobook) i read that this is beard's first book--if he writes more i will definitely read them!

This book is about Tess, a soon-to-be 16 year old girl whose little sister, Zoe is hit by a car and killed on September 11th. Tess writes this book (letter) to Zoe as she deals with her grief over her sisters death. It was a very interesting read – Tess’s voice is told by a male author, and it starts out feeling superficial at first, but Tess’s character feels like any young teen girl you might talk to, today. I enjoyed this book a lot, but I feel like it wrapped up very quickly at the end. I guess that is how grief is. You dance around it, telling all these little stories here and there that lead up to it, and once you confront it, you are able to grown and learn how to live with it. An enjoyable book with a very good voice. ( )

Even now, five years later, people still ask the question, "Where were you on 9/11?" I remember watching, on that fateful day, news coverage that left me horrified, aghast, and haunted. Where was I on 9/11? At work, on a day that started out like any other and quickly turned into one that no one will ever forget.

If you asked Tess DeNunzio, the fifteen-year-old girl at the center of DEAR ZOE, where she was on 9/11, she'll be quick to tell you that she was at home with her younger half-sister, Zoe, waiting for the school bus like any other day. Except for that one moment, when she let her gaze wander elsewhere, and Zoe ran into the street, into the path of an oncoming car. For Tess and her family, 9/11 is a day they'll never forget.

DEAR ZOE is Tess's letter to Zoe, her way of healing from her sister's death and coming to terms with the changes that have taken place in her extended family. Until reading DEAR ZOE, I had never stopped to consider that there were other people around the world who were grieving for lost loved ones who had nothing to do with an act of terror.

Thanks to Mr. Beard, I now have a new way of looking at that day in history. I also have the story of Tess and Zoe, which will stay with me for much longer than it took for me to read the book. Love, loss, regret, and forgiveness mingle within the pages of DEAR ZOE to form a story that, quite possibly, you'll remember even five years later. ( )
