The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup and, in the uproar, Geralt was seriously injured. The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times. But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered from his injuries. While war rages across all of the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it. It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl--Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra, has vanished--until a rumor places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor. Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands.… (mer)

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Baptism of Fire

With the fall of the Wizard Council, Ciri has disappeared, rumored to be captured by Nilfgaard. Near-death from his injuries, Geralt is unable to search for her. As he recovers with the dryads the world enters a time of political upheaval. War breaks out and the sorcerers are left to pick up the pieces of their order.

Baptism of Fire takes a step back from the witcher’s storyline for the majority of the book. As Geralt lies injured and recovering, Sapkowski gives a detailed overview of the world’s politics. I am not one for politics and had a difficult time remembering all the people mentioned as conspirators and spies. The story also came to a stand for the majority of the book as all the politics were divulged.

Of course, when the focus turned to Geralt, the pace picked up. Being injured he is limited in his actions, but it also gave time for readers to see how he is changing. And with the world growing darker, the comparison to himself and the humans around him is clear to see. Even injured he will not stand to see the innocent torn down. Sapkowski also made sure to give Geralt entertaining traveling companions. Dandelion is always a joy to read on-page, and a few dwarves were thrown into the mix as well.

I was surprised to hear the title of the book said multiple times in the story. At one point baptism of fire was used three times in one paragraph. I’m not sure what the point of this was. The meaning behind the title was explained well enough the first time it was used. So much of this book pointed to it being filler. At one point the entire history of Ciri’s bloodline is even explained. If I had not invested so much time in this series already, and knew how good it could be, I may have DNFed this book.

I know this series has potential and can be an entertaining read. I still have hopes for the next book to be worthwhile. I love Geralt’s character, and I can’t wait to see what Ciri’s ultimate destiny will be. ( )

Hm. This is my least favourite of the Witcher books so far. Geralt really is nothing short of an asshole the whole story (though I can sympathise with that given his predicament), and I really detested what has become of Ciri. And there I can sympathise less, since we hardly get to see her POV.

Moreover, I could really do with a world map and some list of dynasties and sorceresses of some sort. I bet I can find it online somewhere, but I kept getting lost in between all the wars and intrigues and stopped caring a bit about who was killing who and why.

However, Sapkowski remains a master storyteller, and keeps on applying different devices all the time to relate this tale. Except for perhaps a few pages which I deemed unnecessary, this was a very pleasurable read still.

On the the next one! :-) ( )

Listened to audio narrated well by Peter Kenny. This book isn't easy to follow as there are so many perspective changes but Kenny brings these characters to life and I enjoyed listening to him.

In this installment the injured Witcher is determined to find and save Ciri and along the way he unintentionally collects a unique group of people to help him whether he wants them or not. While I enjoyed getting to know Milva, Zoltan, Regis and Cahir it felt like I was reading about a DnD adventure.

Geralt is still bad ass but he's also not the emotionless mutant so many claim. While their journey is dangerous, Geralt is changing and must come to terms with who he really is versus what he was trained to be.

Like the other books in the series, this book jumps to various peoples perspectives across the world, with political intrigue, a new mages secret order, Geralt's group and Ciri's time with the Squirrels. This book seems to be more about the characters and underlying motives and plots rather than moving the overall story forward making it feel like your treading water. While there is action and adventure, this story's abrupt ending will have you asking where's the rest of it and what was the point?

I whipped through the first two Witcher story collections and the first two novels. The characters are interesting, the world building is expansive and Geralt is a tried and true stoic hero. Then came Baptism of Fire and it took a month to plod through.

The book opens with Geralt recovering from grievous wounds taken at the end of the last book, when the wizard conclave was torn asunder. He hears that Ciri has been taken captive by Nilfgaard and sets off with a motley crew to free her. Meanwhile, Ciri has found freedom in being a bandit.

Unforunately, the plot never makes progress. Geralt travels, there are skirmishes, evading the enemy, and several action scenes, but he ends the book just as he started: without Ciri and not knowing where she is. Meanwhile the Child of Prophecy runs with The Rats. This was especially disappointing because this book came in a set as a "trilogy" but it's not a conclusion. It doesn't even have a satisfying ebding, or a cliffhanger; it simply stops.

There were some enjoyable parts. I love the political intrigue of the sorceresses starting a secret cabal. And it was great to finally learn what happened to Yennefer. Overall though, this was mostly filler. I still enjoy the Witcher world, but will take a break before reading the remaining books. ( )

Though I’m not so taken with the tell rather than show sections of this series, I’m still absorbed in the world of The Witcher. This book reveals a new take on a classic monster and an ironic surprise at the end. On to the next… ( )
